Life

Brueggemann's father was a German-born Protestant clergyman in Tilden. He passed on his love and connection to the Bible so that he wanted to study theology as well. He became an ordained pastor of the United Church of Christ . From 1961 to 1986 he was Professor of Old Testament at Eden Theological Seminary. He then received the William Marcellus McPheeters Professorship for Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur , Georgia, where he retired in 2003 .

Teaching and work

Brueggemann was strongly influenced by the insights of the French Reformed theologian Paul Ricoeur . He is an advocate and advocate of rhetorical exegesis ( rhetorical criticism ) in biblical interpretation . He also emphasizes the polyphonic character of the Old Testament, which polyvalent interpretations would do better. Differences, ambiguities and contradictions in the texts should remain, because the God of Israel is also complex and puzzling. He has written over a hundred books, authored hundreds of magazine articles and edited various commentaries on books in the Bible. In the 1990s, Brueggemann took part in Bill Moyer's television series for the book Genesis on the television station PBS .
