Steven Richard "Steve" Montador (born December 21, 1979 in Vancouver , British Columbia , † February 15, 2015 in Mississauga , Ontario ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 614 games for Calgary between 1996 and 2013, among other things Flames , Florida Panthers , Anaheim Ducks , Boston Bruins , Buffalo Sabers and Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League has played on the position of defender . Montador celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Saint John Flames by winning the Calder Cup of the American Hockey League in 2001.
Career
After a total of five years in the Ontario Hockey League , in which he had played for the North Bay Centennials , Erie Otters and Peterborough Petes , Steve Montador was hired by the Calgary Flames as a free agent in 1999 .
Initially, however, the defender had to be content for three years with the Flames' farm team , the Saint John Flames in the American Hockey League . In the 2001/02 season , the Canadian made his debut in the National Hockey League and was able to score one goal and contribute two assists in his first season. The next year, Montador was already a regular in Calgary. In the 2003/04 season he was only allowed to play in 26 regular season games for his team, but played again regularly after the Flames reached the playoffs. Montador was part of Calgary's team that lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup final .
During the lockout of the 2004/05 NHL season , Montador played like many other NHL players in Europe. For the French first division club HC Mulhouse from Ligue Magnus , he scored eight points in 15 games, including one goal. After returning to Calgary in the 2005/06 season he was given to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Kristian Huselius shortly after the start of the season . After three seasons in which he got significantly more ice age than in Calgary, the Anaheim Ducks signed him in the summer of 2008 as a free agent.
In early March 2009, the Ducks transferred Steve Montador for Petteri Nokelainen to the Boston Bruins . At the end of the season, Montador's contract ran out and he signed a two-year contract with the Buffalo Sabers . For the Sabers, Montador completed two seasons in which he was able to increase his points. On June 29, 2011, the Sabers transferred Montadors transfer rights - around 25 hours before he would have become available as a free agent, unless he had received a new contract by then - in exchange for a performance-based seven-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft to the Chicago Blackhawks . On June 30, 2011, the defense attorney agreed on a four-year contract with the Blackhawks. In June 2013, however, his contract was early paid off by the Blackhawks (buy out) .
He then moved to Croatia to KHL Medveščak Zagreb in the KHL , where he was under contract until October 2013, before it was dissolved due to a serious injury. Montador has since been without a club and has reportedly suffered from depression and anxiety from the aftermath of his serious injury . On February 15, 2015, Montador was found dead at his home in Mississauga . The police ruled out any third-party fault. A neuropathological post-mortem analysis of his brain revealed that Steve Montador was suffering from the neurodegenerative disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is caused by repeated head butts. Montador, whose family was suing the NHL for reimbursement, had suffered at least three concussions in six months in 2003, at least four in nine months in 2010, and at least four in three months in 2012.
