Leo Charles Reise junior (born June 7, 1922 in Stoney Creek , Ontario , † July 26, 2015 in Hamilton , Ontario) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 546 games for the Chicago Black Hawks between 1941 and 1955 , Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . In service with the Detroit Red Wings, Reise won the Stanley Cup in 1950 and 1952, respectively . In addition, during his nine seasons in the league, he was appointed to the NHL Second All-Star Team twice and took part in the NHL All-Star Game four times .
Already his father Leo Reise senior (1892-1975) was a professional ice hockey player and completed over 220 missions in eight years for the Hamilton Tigers , New York Americans and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League. With the NHL debut of his son, the two formed the first father-son team that brought it to appearances in the league.
Career
Reise was born into an ice hockey family, as his father was active as a professional in the National Hockey League and International Hockey League during his childhood . He himself played from 1939 for two years for the Brantford Lions in a subclass of the Ontario Hockey Association and took part in both years with the team in the Memorial Cup . At the beginning of the 1941/42 season, the defender went on the ice for Guelph Biltmores, who were in the upper class of the OHA , before his path to the NHL was suddenly interrupted in 1942. The 20-year-old was recruited by the Royal Canadian Navy and did his military service for three years until 1945 due to World War II . Meanwhile, he played for the teams at the military bases in Winnipeg , Halifax and Victoria .
After the end of the war, the defender finally switched to the professional field. He spent his first one and a half professional seasons initially split with the Kansas City Pla-Mors in the United States Hockey League , with whom he won the league's first championship in 1946, and the Chicago Black Hawks from the National Hockey League. When he made his NHL debut, he and his father became the first father-son team to be used in the NHL. In December 1946, after a total of 23 pointless NHL missions for Chicago, he switched to the Detroit Red Wings . With him, Pete Horeck also moved there, while the Black Hawks received the players Adam Brown and Ray Powell as compensation . After slight teething problems in Detroit and assignments for the Indianapolis Capitals farm team in the American Hockey League , Reise became an important part of the squad in the following years. From the 1949/50 season , the Canadian was one of the best defensive players in the league. He won the trophy of the same name with the Red Wings at the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1950 , to which he played a significant role by his winning goal in the third extension of the seventh game of the semifinals series against the reigning champions Toronto Maple Leafs . In addition, he was appointed to the NHL Second All-Star Team for the first time , and another nomination followed in the following game year. In 1952 he won his second Stanley Cup with Detroit. In addition, there were two participations in the NHL All-Star Game up to the summer of 1952 , but each as a member of the reigning champions.
In August 1952, Reises successful time with the Red Wings came to an end after almost six years when he was transferred to the New York Rangers in exchange for Reg Sinclair and John Morrison . His father had already played 18 games for them at the beginning of the 1930s. With the Rangers, Reise finally ended his career over two seasons in the NHL, but received two more invitations to the All-Star game during this time in 1952 and 1953 . At the beginning of the 1954/55 season he completely turned his back on the NHL and completed a few more games for the Owen Sound Mercurys in the OHA before he declared his active career in the summer of 1955 at the age of 33 for over.
After the end of his career, Reise founded a successful plumbing business and studied at times. He eventually died in July 2015 at the age of 93 years for a long-term fight against cancer in his adopted hometown of Hamilton in the province of Ontario .
