Martin Nicholas Pavelich (born November 6, 1927 in Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League between 1947 and 1957 .
Career
Marty Pavelich began his career in 1944 with the Galt Red Wings in the Ontario Hockey Association , where he played ice hockey for three years. On September 9, 1947, he signed his first contract as a professional player with the Detroit Red Wings . He started the 1947/48 season with the Indianapolis Capitals in the American Hockey League , for which he was in 26 games. Pavelich earned himself a regular place at the Red Wings in the same season and made it to the final games of the Stanley Cup with the team from Detroit , but lost in four games against the Toronto Maple Leafs . A year later he increased his previous year's figures and scored ten goals, gave 17 assists and collected 27 points in 69 games.
But as in the previous year, the team was defeated in the finals in four games against the Toronto Maple Leafs and missed winning the trophy. In the 1949/50 season he kept his points average from the previous year and defeated the Maple Leafs in seven games in the first round. The hard-fought final series against the New York Rangers - the last four games ended with only one goal difference - was decided in game seven, when the Red Wings scored the decisive goal in the second overtime . In 1952 Pavelich won his second Stanley Cup with the team and prevailed in the finals against the Canadiens de Montréal . In 1954 and 1955 he won the trophy two more times.
Pavelich was invited to an NHL All-Star Game four times , each in the same year as he won the Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings. In Detroit he mostly played in a row with Tony Leswick and Glen Skov . In 1957 he ended his career, but a year later he received another contract offer from Jack Adams , then General Manager in Detroit, which he declined. He later worked as an entrepreneur with Ted Lindsay .
