Wayne Francis Connelly (born November 16, 1939 in Rouyn , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 567 games for the Canadiens de Montréal , Boston Bruins , Minnesota North Stars , Detroit Red Wings during his active career between 1956 and 1977 , St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League and 402 games for the Minnesota Fighting Saints , Cleveland Crusaders , Calgary Cowboys and Edmonton Oilers in the World Hockey Association on the right winger position .

Career

Connelly played at the beginning of his junior years in the 1955/56 season with the New Hamburg Raiders , a second-rate team of the Ontario Hockey Association . At the end of the season, the right winger moved to the top division of the OHA to the Kitchener Rangers , but they took part in the league game operations the following season under the name Peterborough Petes . Connelly was active for the Petes for the following four seasons until the summer of 1960. During his time in the OHA he won the J. Ross Robertson Cup with Peterborough at the end of the 1958/59 season . He was also elected to the League's First All-Star Team. In his final season, he won the Red Tilson Trophy as the most valuable player in the league .

Immediately after the end of the junior season, the winger switched to the professional field in the spring of 1960 and played his first games for the Montreal Royals from the Eastern Professional Hockey League . The 1960/61 season he completed completely with the Royals and his 49 points scorer in 64 games finally led to the fact that he came to three missions with the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League towards the end of the season . The Canadiens finally signed Connelly, but gave him in October 1961 after a few appearances for the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens in the EPHL to the Boston Bruins from the NHL. In Boston, the Canadian fought for a regular place in the 1961/62 season and came to 61 missions. With the beginning of the season 1962/63 Connelly lost his permanent place in the NHL squad and commuted between the same and the squad of the Kingston Frontenacs from the EPHL. The next year it was the Bruins and the San Francisco Seals of the Western Hockey League . The attacker was finally sold to them in June 1964.

After two years of playing permanently in the service of the Seals, in which he came to 149 games and 166 points during this period, the Bruins bought their ex-player back in June 1966. The striker succeeded in the 1966/67 season again to get a regular place in Boston's squad. By the NHL Expansion Draft in 1967 he had to leave the team after only one year because he had been selected by the Minnesota North Stars . Connelly ran for almost two years until February 1969 for the newly founded franchise , before he was given to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Danny Lawson and the transfer rights to Brian Conacher . He was under contract with the original Six team until the 1970/71 season . Since he was unable to confirm his previous year's performance with 59 scorer points by February 1971, the Red Wings parted ways with him in a transfer deal. With Garry Unger Connelly moved to the St. Louis Blues , while they gave up Red Berenson and Tim Ecclestone to Detroit. For the Blues Connelly played only 49 games across seasons, since he was transferred to the New York Rangers in mid-November 1971 together with Gene Carr and Jim Lorentz . In return, André Dupont , Jack Egers and Mike Murphy moved to St. Louis. However, Connelly did not come to work for New York, as he was already involved in the next transfer the following day. Together with Dave Balon and Ron Stewart , he moved to the Vancouver Canucks ; Meanwhile , Gary Doak and Jim Wiste were drawn to the Rangers. At the Canucks he finally ended the season.

In search of more continuity, the attacker moved in the summer of 1972 to the newly founded World Hockey Association , which competed with the NHL. After he was selected in February 1972 in the WHA General Player Draft by the Minnesota Fighting Saints , he went on the ice with the start of the 1972/73 season for them. Connelly played for the Fighting Saints until the 1975/76 season . Only when this had to stop the game in the course of the season, he joined the Cleveland Crusaders as a free agent , where he ended the game year. During the summer break, the Crusaders transferred him to the New England Whalers after only 15 appearances for Fred O'Donnell and Bob McManama , who in turn sold him to the Calgary Cowboys before the start of the season . Even in Calgary, the now 37-year-old winger found no permanent job, as he was sold to the Edmonton Oilers in January 1977 after 25 matches with Claude St. Sauveur . Connelly ended his career at the end of the season.
