Allister Wences "Al" MacNeil (born September 27, 1935 in Sydney , Nova Scotia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , coach and functionary who worked for the Toronto Maple Leafs , Canadiens de Montréal from 1953 to 1970 , Chicago Black Hawks , New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League . For his services in the American Hockey League , the Canadian was honored with the induction into the AHL Hall of Fame in 2014.
Career
Al MacNeil began his career as a hockey player with the Toronto Marlboros , for which he was active from 1953 to 1956 in the junior league of the Ontario Hockey Association . He then received a professional contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League , for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League towards the end of the 1955/56 season . From 1956 to 1960 he ran regularly for the Maple Leafs in the NHL and their new farm team Rochester Americans from the American Hockey League . The 1960/61 season he spent with the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens in the Eastern Professional Hockey League . With his team he immediately won the EPHL championship title. He himself was named to the league's First All-Star Team and voted the season's best defender. Due to his convincing performance, he was appointed to the 1961/62 season in the squad of the Canadiens de Montréal from the NHL, whose farm team was Hull-Ottawa.
From 1962 to 1966 MacNeil played for the NHL team Chicago Black Hawks . In the 1966/67 season he was on the ice for the New York Rangers . He was then selected in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft when the number of participants in the NHL was doubled from six to twelve, by the new league Pittsburgh Penguins . For the Penguins he scored two goals and ten templates in 74 games in the 1967/68 season . In the 1968/69 season he was player-coach with the Houston Apollos from the Central Hockey League and in the 1969/70 season in the same function with the Voyageurs de Montréal from the American Hockey League. He then ended his active career.

In the 1970/71 season he was first assistant, then head coach at his ex-club Canadiens de Montréal, which he led to win the prestigious Stanley Cup . Due to a lack of knowledge of French and problems with the players, he was released from his duties despite the success and transferred to the Canadiens' new farm team, the Nova Scotia Voyageurs from the AHL. In the six years that MacNeil was the head coach of the Nova Scotia Voyageurs, he won the Calder Cup three times (1972, 1976 and 1977) as well as the Louis AR Pieri Memorial Award for best coach in 1972 and 1977 AHL. From 1977 to 1979 he was Director of Player Personell for the Canadiens de Montréal and in this role he won the Stanley Cup twice with his team. For the 1979/80 season he received the opportunity to return to the NHL as head coach from the Atlanta Flames . After relocating the franchise , he also worked for the successor team Calgary Flames for two years . Between 1988 and 2006 the Canadian worked as assistant to the general manager for the Calgary Flames and in 1989 won the Stanley Cup with the team. In the 2002/03 season he was also an interim coach in eleven games for the Flames' NHL team behind the gang.
