Bill Peters (born January 13, 1965 in Three Hills , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach, who last served as the head coach of the Calgary Flames from the National Hockey League from April 2018 to November 2019 . Before that he was in the same position at the Carolina Hurricanes from 2014 to 2018 .

Coaching career

After Peters had previously worked as a scout for the Spokane Chiefs from the Western Hockey League for three years , he was appointed by the club as the team's assistant coach for the 1999/00 season . After three seasons he moved to the university team at the University of Lethbridge in the CIS , where he served as head coach between 2002 and 2005. In the same capacity, the Canadian returned to the Chiefs in the WHL for the 2005/06 season and won both the Ed Chynoweth Cup and the Memorial Cup with the team in the 2007/08 season . In the summer of 2008 he was hired by the Chicago Blackhawks to coach their farm team , the Rockford IceHogs from the American Hockey League .

From the 2011/12 season, Peters held the position of assistant coach at the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League , where he was mainly responsible for the defensive and the minority game. After three seasons, he moved within the league to the Carolina Hurricanes , which he has been head coach since the 2014/15 season .

Parallel to his work in the NHL, he looked after the Canadian national team at the 2016 World Cup and led the team to the gold medal. He also acted as the assistant coach of Team Canada at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , in which the team also won the gold medal.

After four seasons in Carolina, Peters stepped down from his position as head coach of the Hurricanes in April 2018, following the recommendation of the new majority owner Tom Dundon , who had previously implemented changes to the position of general manager in the person of Ron Francis . Just days later, Peters was introduced as the new head coach of the Calgary Flames , where he succeeded Glen Gulutzan .

After just over a season, Peters resigned as head coach of the Flames in November 2019. A few days earlier, Akim Aliu , a player of Nigerian descent, accused him via Twitter of having racially insulted him several times while he was at the Rockford IceHogs, when Mike Babcock was fired in Toronto . Peters admitted this and apologized publicly. In the meantime, other critical voices have emerged, including Michal Jordán accusing him of kicking or hitting other players during a game while in Carolina. After the organization of the Flames finally announced an investigation into the proceedings, Peters resigned as head coach. He was succeeded on an interim basis by his assistant Geoff Ward .

Peters is married and has two children.
