Robert James "Bob" Kelly (born November 25, 1950 in Port Credit , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played 938 games for the Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League in the course of his active career between 1968 and 1982 on the position of the left winger . Kelly won the Stanley Cup with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975 .
Career
Kelly spent his junior years between 1968 and 1970 with the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey Association , where he completed a total of 107 games in two seasons and recorded 96 points scorer . Following his second year in the junior division, he was selected in the third round in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft in 32nd place by the Philadelphia Flyers from the National Hockey League .
The striker made the leap into the Flyers NHL squad for the 1970/71 season and reached 32 points in his rookie season . With the engagement of Fred Shero as head coach in the summer of 1971, the Flyers developed a reputation as a very physical team, which was nicknamed "Broad Street Bullies" . In the squad, Kelly and Dave Schultz were considered one of the best enforcers and pests . Since Shero valued these qualities very much, the attacker only scored more than 20 goals in one game year. Instead, he played a key role in the franchise's only two Stanley Cup triumphs in 1974 and 1975 .
After a total of ten years in the service of the Flyers they restructured their team in the summer of 1980, which Kelly was given in exchange for a third-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 1982 to the Washington Capitals . At the capital club, the Canadian spent a successful season for him in 1980/81 , in which he set up career highs alongside Dennis Maruk and Mike Gartner with 26 goals, 36 assists and 62 scorer points. His second year with the Capitals was all the more disappointing with just four points in 16 season appearances after there had been a change to the post of head coach and general manager before the season . Thereupon Kelly canceled the current contract in the summer of 1982 at the age of 31 and announced his immediate withdrawal from active professional sport.
