The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1988 after the meteorologist Jack Renew Ewer (* 1918) from the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey , who was stationed at Cape Geddes from January to March 1947 and on Deception Island from 1947 to 1948 and at the crossing of Laurie Island was involved across this pass.
