His cousin Charlie Coyle is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Sheehan, who was born in Weymouth , Massachusetts , spent part of his junior career between 1966 and 1968 with the Halifax Junior Canadiens in the Canadian junior league Maritime Junior A Hockey League . From there he moved in the summer of 1968 to the Ontario Hockey Association for the St. Catharines Black Hawks . There he reached with the team in the 1968/69 season the final of the J. Ross Robertson Cup , which was lost to the Canadien junior de Montréal . With a total of 108 scorer points in 62 missions, the center played a major role in this. The following summer he was selected in the NHL Amateur Draft 1969 in the third round in 32nd place by the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League and immediately put under contract.

After moving to the professional field in the summer of 1969, Sheehan spent the following two playing years in the service of the Canadiens de Montréal in the NHL and with their farm team , the Voyageurs de Montréal , in the American Hockey League . However, since he did not manage to meet the expectations of the Canadiens, they sold him to league rivals California Golden Seals in May 1971 . There he made his breakthrough in the NHL with 46 points in 78 games this season. With the establishment of the World Hockey Association for the 1972/73 season as a league competing with the NHL, however, new opportunities opened up for the American. After he was selected in February 1972 in the WHA General Player Draft by the New England Whalers , he joined the New York Raiders in the league's premier season. Previously, New England had traded its transfer rights for a first- and four-round suffrage in the 1973 WHA Amateur Draft . During his time in New York, his NHL transfer rights were transferred to the Chicago Black Hawks in December 1972 . Unimpressed by this, Sheehan collected 88 points in his first WHA season. In the next game year the striker was the franchise of the New York Golden Blades and Jersey Knights active, had left the Raiders out. With another change in exchange for Bob Falkenberg in March 1974, he ended the season with the Edmonton Oilers in the WHA. Sheehan also ran into the Oilers in the 1974/75 season .

In the summer of 1975, the attacker pulled back to the NHL, where he ran from then on for the Chicago Black Hawks, who had tied him for a season. He then moved to the 1976/77 season as a free agent for the Detroit Red Wings . After he was there in the AHL again in the course of the season and he had not been able to establish himself permanently in the Detroit squad, he returned again to the WHA. After a few games for the Indianapolis Racers , he moved to the American Hockey League for the New Haven Nighthawks . Through this he was able to recommend himself in October 1978 for a contract with the New York Rangers from the NHL, where he - after he had spent the entire 1978/79 season with the Nighthawks and had been appointed to the AHL Second All-Star Team - in The course of the Stanley Cup playoffs debuted in 1979 and reached the final series. The 15 playoff appearances should remain his only for the Rangers, however, as he was given up to the Colorado Rockies after the game year .

This let him initially continue to play in New Haven, but also with the Fort Worth Texans in the Central Hockey League . In the two playing years up to the summer of 1981, he ran 71 times for the Rockies in the NHL, before moving to the Los Angeles Kings as a free agent in the summer of 1981 . This let him go on the ice with the New Haven Nighthawks in the AHL and only called him four times in the NHL squad. His last professional station was in the game year 1982/83, the Binghamton Whalers from the AHL, before he declared his active career in the summer of 1983 at the age of 34 for an end.

International

Sheehan played for his home country at the 1981 World Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden . He collected two scorer points in eight tournament appearances and reached fifth place with the team.
