David Theodore Creighton (born June 24, 1930 in Port Arthur , Ontario - † August 18, 2017 in Wesley Chapel , Florida , USA ) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach who worked for various franchises of the American Hockey League (AHL ) and the National Hockey League (NHL) played in over 1,500 games at the center . During this time he took part in the NHL All-Star Game five times , and in 1968 he was awarded the Les Cunningham Award as the most valuable player in the AHL . His son Adam Creighton was also active in the National Hockey League from 1983 to 1996.

Career

Dave Creighton began his career in 1946 with the Port Arthur West End Bruins in the Thunder Bay Junior Hockey League , a regional junior league of the Canadian province of Ontario . During this time he won with the Bruins for a final triumph against the Barrie Flyers the Memorial Cup 1948 . After two seasons, he accepted a contract offer from the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League on October 5, 1948 . In the following four years Creighton was both with the Bruins in the NHL, and for their farm team Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League to use. With the beginning of the NHL season 1952/53 , the center belonged to the permanent staff of the Boston Bruins and completed 134 games for the franchise from the US state of Massachusetts in the following two seasons .

On July 20, 1954, the Bruins gave him in exchange for Fernie Flaman from the Toronto Maple Leafs . The Maple Leafs passed the offensive player on to the Chicago Black Hawks after 14 games of the 1954/55 season . After the end of the season, the Detroit Red Wings received the rights to the player after a transfer deal on May 27, 1955. Dave Creighton, however, never completed a game for the Red Wings, as he was already part of a player swap on August 18, 1955 and was given to the New York Rangers . In New York, Creighton had his statistically most successful time in the National Hockey League. So he ended the NHL season in 1955/56 as the second best point collector of the Rangers. League-wide , his 51 points scored in 70 games were the tenth most.

After three seasons for the New York Rangers, he was selected on June 3, 1958 in the Intra-League Draft of the Montréal Canadiens . For the Canadiens, however, the center never ran, as the Toronto Maple Leafs signed him on September 28, 1958, before the start of the 1958/59 season , from the waiver list . For the Maple Leafs Dave Creighton came in the following two seasons only in a total of 48 NHL games and spent the majority, as well as the entire season 1960/61, with Toronto's farm team Rochester Americans . In June 1961, the Toronto Maple Leafs finally gave Dave Creighton to the Buffalo Bisons .

After a season for the bison, it was passed on to the Baltimore Clippers . In Baltimore, the offensive player completed three full seasons before he was transferred to the Providence Reds during the current AHL season 1965/66 . It was his ninth change of club in 12 years. With the Reds, Creighton once again became a reliable offensive force and was the Reds' most successful points collector in his first two seasons. In the AHL season 1967/68 Dave Creighton was honored as the most valuable player in the American Hockey League with the Les Cunningham Award . After another season for the Reds, Creighton ended his playing career after 21 years as a professional.

During this period, the Reds qualified in the 1967/68 and 1968/69 seasons for the American Hockey League play-offs and were eliminated in both years in the second play-off round. In the 1969/70 AHL season , the Providence Reds missed qualifying for the finals for the Calder Cup , whereupon Dave Creighton's employment with the Reds was terminated.
