Darryl Marion Sydor (born May 13, 1972 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach with US citizenship. The defender denied during his playing career from 1992 to 2010, among other 1446 games for the Los Angeles Kings , Dallas Stars , Columbus Blue Jackets , Tampa Bay Lightning , Pittsburgh Penguins and St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League . He won the Stanley Cup in 1999 with the Dallas Stars and in 2004 with the Tampa Bay Lightning . He also won the gold medal with the Canadian national team at the 1994 World Cup . Then Sydor worked in the NHL for the Minnesota Wild and the St. Louis Blues as an assistant coach.
Career
Sydor played with Scott Niedermayer for the Kamloops Blazers in the Western Hockey League during his junior years . In the 1990 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the first round as the overall seventh. He stayed in Kamloops for two more years and won the Memorial Cup in his junior year. Also in the 1991/92 season he made his NHL debut with the Kings.
From the 1992/93 season he was an integral part of the Kings, with whom he reached the final series of the Stanley Cup in his first year . The Montréal Canadiens snatched the title away from the Kings around Wayne Gretzky . During his time with the Kings, the title also fell at the 1994 World Cup . For Shane Churla and Doug Zmolek , the Kings gave it to the Dallas Stars in February 1996 . After the stars missed the playoffs, he was able to win the silver medal with the Canadian national team at the 1996 World Cup .
In the following years he gave security to the defense of the stars and was nominated twice for the NHL All-Star Game . He too had a large share in the Stars' Stanley Cup win in the 1998/99 season . The following year he reached his third final series with the team, but as with his first attempt, he failed. In the summer of 2003, the Columbus Blue Jackets got him in exchange for Mike Sillinger and a draft right. These passed him on to the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2003/04 season . With Tampa he reached the final of the Stanley Cup again and was able to win his second title there. After the 2004/05 strike season , he stayed with the Bolts for a year before returning to the Dallas Stars for a four-round draft right, where he only stayed until the end of the season due to his contract expiring. On July 1, 2007, he signed a new contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins as a free agent . He remained loyal to this over the entire season and reached the final of the Stanley Cup with the team, where the team was defeated by the Detroit Red Wings . After a poor start to Sydors 2008/09 season , he was transferred to defender Philippe Boucher to his ex-team, the Dallas Stars .
Sydor signed at the beginning of the 2009/10 NHL season a one-year contract with the St. Louis Blues , for which he completed 47 games. On July 13, 2010, the defender announced his retirement. In the 2010/11 season , Sydor worked with Brian Wiseman as an assistant coach at the Houston Eros under head coach Mike Yeo . After Yeo's promotion, who was hired as head coach of the Minnesota Wild in June 2011 , Sydor followed him as an assistant coach at the end of the month. His contract there was not renewed after the end of the 2015/16 season. In May 2017, Sydor was introduced as the new assistant coach at the St. Louis Blues, where he again worked under Mike Yeo. After the end of the 2017/18 season, Sydor announced his retirement from the ice hockey business, while his successor in St. Louis was Mike Van Ryn .
In addition, Sydor has been a co-owner of the Kamloops Blazers since 2007, for which he played in his youth.
