Tahir "Tie" Domi (born November 1, 1969 in Windsor , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 1118 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs , New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets in the course of his active career between 1986 and 2006 National Hockey League on the position of the right winger . Especially during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Domi gained greater fame in his function as enforcer , as he is only surpassed by Tiger Williams and Dale Hunter with a total of 3515 penalty minutes in the NHL . His son Max Domi is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Domi, who is of Albanian descent, grew up in Belle River, Ontario. He began his active career in 1984 with the Belle River Canadiens , for which he was a year in the Great Lakes Junior C Hockey League in use. Already during this time he appeared mainly through his numerous fights and received a total of 98 penalty minutes in 28 games. In the following year, the right- shooter went on the ice for the Windsor Bulldogs and collected 346 penalty minutes in 42 games. From 1986 to 1989 he played in the Ontario Hockey League with the Peterborough Petes . In the 1988 NHL Entry Draft he was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second round at a total of 27th position.

In the 1989/90 season he completed his first two games for the Maple Leafs in the NHL, making his debut in the game against the Detroit Red Wings . He did not manage to score a point, but a remarkable 42 penalty minutes. In the following season he was bartered to the New York Rangers . There the appearances against the Detroit Red Wings and his fights against Bob Probert were highlights of a special kind. While the audience often had the impression that the one head taller Probert had clearly won the fight, one saw on TV how Domi despite worst hit constantly laughed at his opponent and talked to him incessantly. On March 23, 1991, he scored his first NHL goal in the game against the Philadelphia Flyers . During this time Domi struck the hearts of North American ice hockey fans. His move to the Winnipeg Jets didn't detract from his popularity. In 1995 he returned to Toronto and was instantly one of the crowd's favorites.

Due to the many penalty minutes he received, Domi was one of those players for years who were among the leading players on the penalty times list. He had a dangerous style of play, but was often apparent through his physical game by messing with an opponent who was obviously physically superior to him. In the 1997/98 season Domi set his career best with 365 penalty minutes and was only surpassed in the league by Donald Brashear , who sat in the penalty box for 372 minutes.

In the 2000/01 season Tie got a visit to the penalty box at a game in Philadelphia. An angry fan challenged him to a fist fight, but pulled the short straw. In the same season he stuck during the playoff series against the New Jersey Devils their defender Scott Niedermayer with an elbow blow and was suspended for this action for the entire play-offs and for eight more games in the following season. On June 30, 2002, the Maple Leafs gave him in exchange for an eight-round suffrage to the Nashville Predators , for which he however never appeared. 15 days later Domi signed again as a free agent with the Maple Leafs. In the 2002/03 season he achieved his best point yield in the NHL, when Domi scored a total of 29 points in 79 games. Domi was determined to stay in Toronto, but on June 30, 2006, the Maple Leafs announced that they had terminated Domi's contract. On September 19, 2006, Tie Domi, who could not imagine wearing another jersey than the Leafs, announced his resignation.
