At the 2016 World Cup , he won the gold medal with the Canadian national team. He is the son of Tie Domi , who played over 1000 games in the NHL and is considered one of the most famous enforcers .

Career

Family and youth

Domi's family has Albanian roots, as his paternal grandfather emigrated to Canada after World War II. Max Domi was born in Winnipeg when his father was there for the Jets , but grew up in Toronto , where his father played for the Maple Leafs for more than ten years . Domi came into contact with ice hockey from an early age and knew various greats of the sport personally, for example Mario Lemieux , Mats Sundin and Sidney Crosby . In his youth he played for Don Mills Flyers and St. Michael's Buzzers , among others , while attending the prestigious Upper Canada College from third to tenth grade.

London Knights

In the Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Kingston Frontenacs selected him in 2011 in eighth position, but he was given a short time later for three second-round voting rights to the London Knights . This swap was initiated by his father, who knew the General Manager of the Frontenacs, Doug Gilmour , from his time with the Maple Leafs. Thus Domi played for the London Knights in the OHL at the beginning of the 2011/12 season, where he scored 49 points in 62 games in his rookie season and was elected to the Second All-Rookie Team at the end of the season . He also won the OHL playoffs with the team and thus the J. Ross Robertson Cup . He also took part in 2012 with Team Canada Ontario in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge , where they won the bronze medal, as well as the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament , in which the Canadian selection won the gold medal.

In the following season 2012/13 Domi increased his personal statistics significantly (87 points in 64 games) and thus moved more into the focus of the scouts after he had already participated in the CHL Top Prospects Game during the season . After winning another championship at the end of the year, the Phoenix Coyotes selected him in the NHL Entry Draft 2013 from 12th overall position and equipped him a few weeks later with an entry contract . However, the attacker stayed two more seasons in London, in which he was elected to the Third and First All-Star Team of the OHL. At the end of the 2014/15 season, in which he led the Knights as team captain, he was also honored with the Mickey Renaud Captain's Trophy for outstanding leadership skills. He also took part with the Canadian U20 national team at the turn of the year in the U20 World Cup, at which the team became junior world champions in their own country. Domi himself was not only voted the most dangerous attacker with five goals, but also the best striker and the all-star team of the World Cup.

Arizona Coyotes and Canadiens de Montréal

As part of the preparation for the 2015/16 season , Domi managed to jump into the NHL line-up of Coyotes, which have been operating under the name Arizona Coyotes since 2014 . He made his debut on October 9, 2015 against the Los Angeles Kings , in which he recorded a goal and an assist. In January 2016, the attacker scored the first hat trick of his NHL career in his team's 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers . He finished his first NHL season with 52 points in 81 games in third place on the rookie scorer list. He then made his senior debut for Team Canada and won the gold medal with the team at the 2016 World Cup . There followed two more seasons with the Coyotes, in which the attacker could not statistically build on his rookie season.

On June 15, 2018, Domi was finally given to the Canadiens de Montréal in exchange for Alex Galchenyuk . With the Canadiens he achieved his best NHL statistic to date with 72 scorer points in the 2018/19 season and led his new team in this category.

During games, he wears an insulin pump attached to his hip , which he uses to regulate his blood sugar level. After the diagnosis, he changed his shirt number based on Bobby Clarke from 13 to 16, who also wore this shirt number and suffered from diabetes. Domi was also part of a Bayer AG campaign for young athletes with type 1 diabetes.
