Christian Folin (born February 9, 1991 in Gothenburg ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Canadiens de Montréal in the National Hockey League since February 2019 and plays for them in the position of defender .
Career
Christian Folin was born in Gothenburg and went through the junior departments of Frölunda HC in his hometown . In the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons, the defender played for the club's U20 team in the J20 SuperElit , Sweden's highest junior league. In 2010 he also completed a single assignment at Hanhals IF in Division 2 , the fourth highest division. Folin then left his home country without being selected in an NHL Entry Draft and joined the Fargo Force from the United States Hockey League (USHL) at the beginning of the 2010/11 season . In Fargo, the defender completed twelve missions before moving to the Austin Bruins in the North American Hockey League (NAHL), which is one level lower . There Folin established himself and came in the 2011/12 season on 31 scorer points in 54 games, so that he enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Lowell in the following fall . At UMass Lowell he began to study economics and from then on played for their ice hockey team, the River Hawks , in Hockey East from the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .
As a freshman , Folin won the Hockey East championship with the River Hawks , before leading all defenders of his team in points (20) the following year. As a result, the Minnesota Wild from the National Hockey League (NHL) equipped him with an entry contract in April 2014 and made him debut directly in the NHL a little later, where he succeeded in assisting. In the following season 2014/15 Folin came to 40 NHL appearances, which he no longer reached the following year with 26 games, but was also used regularly with the Iowa Wild , the farm team of the Minnesota Wild from the American Hockey League (AHL ). With the start of the 2016/17 season , the Swede is again in the NHL lineup of the Wild.
After three years in Minnesota, his expiring contract was not extended after the 2016/17 season, so the Swede joined the Los Angeles Kings as a free agent in July 2017 . In the same way, he moved to the Philadelphia Flyers in July 2018 . There the Swede was unable to fully meet the expectations placed on him, so that he was transferred to the Canadiens de Montréal together with Dale Weise in February 2019 . In return, Byron Froese and David Schlemko switched to the Flyers.
