Donald Maynard Brashear (born January 7, 1972 in Bedford , Indiana ) is a former Canadian - American ice hockey player who played 1085 games for the Canadiens de Montréal , Vancouver Canucks , Philadelphia Flyers , Washington Capitals and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League on the position of left winger . Brashear was considered one of the toughest and best enforcers in their history during his 16 seasons in the NHL . Brashear is the great-nephew of Carl Brashear , whose life inspired the film Men of Honor .

Career

Brashear began his NHL career with the Canadiens de Montréal , who hired him as a free agent before the 1992/93 season . He had previously played for the Collège Français de Longueuil in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec .

In 1996, the 1.88 m tall and 108 kg winger was transferred to the Vancouver Canucks after he clashed with Canadiens coach Mario Tremblay at a training camp in Denver . After a serious head injury sustained by the left-shooter in a game against the Boston Bruins on February 21, 2000 , Brashear was out for several months, Marty McSorley , who had given him the stick that led to the injury, was then due Assault sentenced to 18 months probation.

During the 2001/02 season , Donald Brashear returned to the ice, on December 17, 2001 he was transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Jan Hlaváč . The following season the striker received the Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Trophy for the Flyers' most improved player in the current season. During the NHL lockout 2004/05 Donald Brashear played for the Radio X de Québec in the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey . On 14 July 2006 Brashear signed a 1.1 million US dollar doped year contract with the Washington Capitals . In the summer of 2009 he was signed by the New York Rangers , but on August 1, 2010, together with Patrick Rissmiller, handed over to the Atlanta Thrashers . Three days later, the Thrashers prematurely terminated his contract and had it paid off.

In September 2010, Brashear signed with the GCI de Sorel-Tracy in the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey . After six games, he was signed by 3L de Rivière-du-Loup in November 2010 . He stayed there until the summer of 2013 before, after a one-year break, he entered into a one-year engagement with MODO Hockey from the Svenska Hockeyligan . After a few appearances for the Assurancia de Thetford in the LNAH in the 2015/16 season, the attacker ended his active career.
