František "Frank" Musil (born December 17, 1964 in Pardubice , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player and coach as well as current scout , who played 839 games for the Minnesota North Stars , Calgary Flames , during his active career between 1980 and 2002 , Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . He also took part in five world championships and two Canada Cups . At the 1985 World Cup he won the world title with the Czechoslovak national team .
Career
Musil learned to play ice hockey in the youth academy of the club in his hometown, the TJ Tesla Pardubice . There he made his debut in the top Czechoslovakian league as a 16-year-old . In the following three years, the young defender established himself in the club's regular squad. During this time he was also selected in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft in the second round in 38th position by the Minnesota North Stars from the National Hockey League . The choice by the North Stars so early in the draft was very surprising, as it was considered impossible due to the Iron Curtain that Musil would ever play in North America. For the 1984/85 season , the defender left his home club and switched to the figurehead of Czechoslovak ice hockey and serial champion ASD Dukla Jihlava . In the very first season there, Musil celebrated winning the Czechoslovak championship . The following year came third.
After the season Musil applied in summer 1986, a holiday visa and traveled with his girlfriend to Yugoslavia . There he met with Lou Nanne , then general manager of the Minnesota North Stars, and a player advisor who had organized an American work visa for Musil. With the valid visa it was possible to deceive the Yugoslav authorities, because they were not aware that Musil was trying to escape to the United States . The North Stars had been working on this plan since the 1983 draft, initially waiting for the defender to complete his military service in order not to be considered a deserter . Due to the valid visa, Musil's “escape” was legal in all respects.
The Czech graduated in the 1986-87 season as a rookie 72 games for the franchise from Minnesota. In the following three years he played a solid part in the defensive network. Shortly after the start of the 1990/91 season in October 1990, the North Stars separated from their defensive specialist and exchanged him for Brian Glynn of the Calgary Flames . The move to Calgary brought Musil's best season in the NHL. In total, he was on the ice in 75 games and reached 23 points scorer . Ultimately, the Czech stayed with the Flames until October 1995 - only interrupted by lockout at the beginning of the NHL season 1994/95 when Musil returned to his Czech homeland and played for HC Sparta Prague in the extra league. In addition, he was once on the ice in the German Ice Hockey League for ESG Füchse Sachsen .
After Musil had played the 1994/95 season at the Calgary Flames to the end, they transferred him to the Ottawa Senators in October 1995 for a four-round suffrage in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft . While he had played some games for HC Becherovka Karlovy Vary in the second-rate first division during the season , he spent most of this and the 1996/97 season with the Senators in the Canadian capital. For the 1997/98 season , however, they pushed the defender from the International Hockey League , where he played for the Indianapolis Ice and Detroit Vipers . A transfer in March 1998 revived the career of the now 33-year-old when he was given to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Scott Ferguson . At the Oilers, the Czech immediately got a place in the NHL squad again. In the 1998/99 season he was usually the seventh defender in the squad and came to 39 games. The 1999/2000 season began Musil injury completely out after he suffered a disc injury in the season preparatory training camp. The aftermath dragged on into the following season, in which he was incapacitated from January 2001 due to a neck injury associated with it. In total, he came to only 13 NHL missions between October 1999 and April 2001. The Oilers then did not renew his contract as a player. Instead, they've been using him as a scout ever since . Musil played a few more games for HC Dukla Jihlava in the second-class first division at the end of his career in the 2001/02 season .
In addition to his work as a scout for the Edmonton Oilers, Musil worked sporadically for the Czech ice hockey association Český svaz ledního hokeje . He was at the 2006 World Cup in the Latvian capital Riga , where the Czechs finished second, and the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia's Sochi as an assistant coach of the national team operates. In the same position he was in charge of the U18 selection at the U18 Junior World Championship in the United States in 2009 .
International
Musil initially represented Czechoslovakia until he moved to North America in 1986 in numerous competitions in the junior and senior sector and won medals several times. So he played at the U18 Junior European Championships in 1981 and 1982 , which he ended with winning the silver medal. He won the same medal at the U20 Junior World Championships in 1982 and 1983 . This was joined by a bronze medal at the U20 Junior World Championship in 1984 and the election to the all-star team of the tournament.
For the men's selection of the Czechoslovaks, the defender played for the first time in the 1983 World Cup at the age of 19. The Czechoslovaks won the silver medal, which was synonymous with winning the silver medal at the European championship that was held at the same time. A year later he represented Czechoslovakia at the Canada Cup , before his international career was crowned by winning the world title at the 1985 World Cup . In the same breath he secured second place in the European Championship, which was also held. The 1986 World Cup remained his last international tournament for the next five years after he fled to the United States.
With the fall of the Iron Curtain , Musil was part of the Czechoslovak squad again for the first time during the 1991 World Cup . At the 1991 Canada Cup , he then led the selection into the tournament as team captain . His last World Cup medal was the bronze medal at the 1992 World Cup , where he was also elected to the All-Star Team. For the Czech national team he stepped on the ice alone at the 1994 World Cup .
