Louis Dennis "Louie" DeBrusk (born March 19, 1971 in Cambridge , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 416 games for the Edmonton Oilers , Tampa Bay Lightning , Phoenix Coyotes and Chicago in the course of his active career between 1998 and 2004 Blackhawks in the National Hockey League on the left winger position . DeBrusk embodied the Enforcer player type . His son Jake DeBrusk is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
DeBrusk spent his junior years between 1988 and 1991 with the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League , where he acted as a power forward and proved to be a profitable scorer with 30 goals in his third year. In the 1989 NHL Entry Draft , the striker was selected in the third round in 49th place by the New York Rangers from the National Hockey League . At the end of the 1990/91 season DeBrusk made his professional debut in the jersey of the Binghamton Rangers , the farm team of the New York Rangers, from the American Hockey League . However, without playing a game for the New York Rangers, he was sent to the Edmonton Oilers in October 1991 in a so-called " blockbuster " transfer together with Bernie Nicholls and Steven Rice . Meanwhile, the Rangers received Mark Messier and a month later - in another transfer deal between the two teams - Jeff Beukeboom . In return, David Shaw also moved to Edmonton.
In his first year as a professional DeBrusk, who now primarily played the role of an enforcer , commuted between the Edmonton NHL squad and that of the Cape Breton Oilers farm team in the AHL. It was not until the 1992/93 season that the attacker was firmly in the Edmonton Oilers' squad. In the following five years DeBrusk came in the service of the Oilers only once over the number of 50 completed season games. In the summer of 1997, he finally left the club and joined the Tampa Bay Lightning as a free agent . There he played 54 NHL appearances, but was also used in the International Hockey League with the San Antonio Dragons and transferred to the Phoenix Coyotes in June 1998 with a five-round vote in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft . In return, Craig Janney moved from Phoenix to Tampa.
After initial assignments in numerous Coyotes farm teams and only sporadic minutes of action in the NHL, the Canadian was a permanent member of the Phoenix NHL squad for the following two years from the 1999/2000 season . However, his contract was not extended in the summer of 2001. After the winger had not found a new employer by November of the same year, he joined the Citadelles de Québec from the AHL by means of a trial contract limited to 25 games . However, this was dissolved after only nine missions just a month later, as the league competitor Hamilton Bulldogs had offered him a contract until the end of the season. DeBrusk then ended the 2001/02 season in Hamilton. For the 2002/03 season, the free agent was hired by the Chicago Blackhawks for one year . This used him mainly in the AHL with the Norfolk Admirals . He also came to four games for the Blackhawks. His last station in professional sport was in the 2003/04 season, the Hartford Wolf Pack from the American Hockey League, which had signed him on trial in December 2003. The 33-year-old then ended his active career.
At the end of his career, DeBrusk switched to radio , where he worked as an expert on the broadcasts of the Phoenix Coyotes' games. From 2008 to 2014 he worked in the same function for the television broadcasts of the Edmonton Oilers. Sporadically he also took over this function in the following years. Since 2016 he can be seen in the program Hockey Night in Canada on the Canadian television channel CBC .
