John Bradley Werenka (born February 12, 1969 in Two Hills , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach who worked for the Edmonton Oilers , Nordiques de Québec , Chicago Blackhawks , Pittsburgh Penguins and among others from 1984 to 2001 Calgary Flames has played in the National Hockey League .
Career
Brad Werenka began his career as a hockey player with the Fort Saskatchewan Traders, for which he was active from 1984 to 1986 in the Alberta Junior Hockey League . He then attended Northern Michigan University for five years , for whose ice hockey team he played parallel to his studies in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association . During this period he was selected in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft in the second round as a total of 42nd player by the Edmonton Oilers . For their farm team Cape Breton Oilers he played from 1991 to 1994 in the American Hockey League , where he won the Calder Cup with his team in the 1992/93 season . For Edmonton himself he completed 42 NHL games during this period. In March 1994 he was given in exchange for Steve Passmore within the NHL to the Nordiques de Québec . By the end of the 1993/94 season , he was eleven times for the Nordiques in the NHL on the ice while he spent the playoffs with their AHL farm team Cornwall Aces . In the 1994/95 season he appeared for the Milwaukee Admirals in the International Hockey League .
From 1995 to 1997 Werenka played for the Indianapolis Ice in the IHL. In the 1995/96 season he also completed nine NHL games with their cooperation partner Chicago Blackhawks . During the 1996/97 season he was one of the leading players at the Indianapolis Ice. For the team, he completed all 82 regular season games and consistently performed well, for which he was awarded the IHL Ironman Award . He also received the Governor's Trophy as the best defender in the league and was voted into the first All-Star Team of the IHL. From 1997 to 2000 the Canadian was a regular for the NHL team Pittsburgh Penguins . In March 2000 it was given to the Calgary Flames in exchange for Tyler Moss and René Corbet . There he was also a regular player in the following years, but had to end his career prematurely after a severe concussion, which he suffered on December 29, 2000 in a game against the Dallas Stars .
In the 2006/07 season Werenka was active as an assistant coach for the Chilliwack Bruins from the Canadian Junior League Western Hockey League .
International
For Canada Werenka took part in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , where he won the silver medal with his team.
