The Double - Eiskaltes Duell (Original title: The Double ) is an American agent thriller by the director Michael Brandt from 2011 .

action

During the Cold War , CIA agent Paul Shepherdson hunted down a group of professional killers in the service of the KGB , the Cassius Seven and their head Cassius . Around 20 years after the collapse of communism, FBI agent Ben Geary wrote his dissertation on Cassius , who was never caught, and knows every file on him. Senator Dennis Darden is under FBI surveillance for ominous contacts with Russia . The agents are about to finish their shift when the senator is murdered, in a way that is typical of Cassius: his throat is cut. The case is being taken over by the CIA. Its director is Tom Highland and the US president wants to see results from him.

The retired Paul Shepherdson, who lives alone and likes to watch a baseball game in the neighborhood, is reactivated for the investigation . He is anything but enthusiastic about the idea. Director Highland puts the bureaucratic Geary at his side, who has never worked in the field but is now at the goal of his dreams because he is actually allowed to go on the hunt for Cassius. The only lead is Brutus, a member of the Cassius Seven who is in solitary confinement. Shepherdson and Geary visit him in prison. Geary tries unsuccessfully to get information from him. He doesn't say anything until he receives a radio brought by Shepherdson. It describes the inhumane training under Cassius' command and provides a reference to Russian exiles living in the USA.

After the agents leave the cell, Brutus swallows the batteries from the radio, causing convulsions so violent that he is rushed to a hospital. There he manages to escape, which is abruptly ended by Shepherdson, who is already waiting for him at the back entrance. He now reveals himself as Cassius and kills Brutus by cutting his throat with a steel cable hidden in his watch. Geary, meanwhile, continues to search the files for a clue to Cassius's identity. The suspicion is then directed to a group of Russians who entered illegally across the Mexican border and whose leader is Bozlovski. Bozlovski is a Russian agent who was and is being smuggled abroad for assassinations. In the 1980s he murdered members of the Polish trade union Solidarność for the KGB . Shepherdson spends an evening with Geary, his wife Natalie, and their children. He later tries to influence Natalie to persuade Geary to stop chasing Cassius. He doesn't want to have to kill the young agent who comes dangerously close to him in the course of his ongoing investigation. The family probably reminds him too much of his own. She was murdered by Bozlovski near Geneva in 1988 .

The trail directed towards Bozlovski gives Shepherdson a boost in motivation and he is intent on following Bozlovski. Through an informant , he learns about the prostitute Amber, who lives in a trailer park and is said to have contact with Bozlovski. Shepherdson tries very brutally to get information from her, but fails. Geary, on the other hand, has more success by developing a relationship with her. They can track down Bozlovski in his hiding place, but he escapes.

Shepherdson finally succeeds in catching his adversary Bozlovski in the harbor, where the two of them chase a car. Neither of them succeeds in killing the other until Geary lends him a shot. Then it turns out that Geary is a Russian sleeper who has the assignment to support Bozlovski and ultimately to kill Cassius . Then he should return to Russia - without his family. But Shepherdson manages to convince Geary that his family is worth more than anything that could await him in Russia. And so together they overpower Bozlovski; but Shepherdson ultimately succumbs to his injuries sustained in battle. Geary lies to the authorities and tells them that Bozlovski, who was dead, was Cassius.

Geary is on his way home. In front of his house he hesitates noticeably when he is asked to choose between his family and returning to Russia, but ultimately stays with his family in the USA.

reception

"Conventionally inconsequential buddy thriller that tries in vain to create the atmosphere of the Cold War."

“Conclusion: The Double offers a very entertaining and exciting first half hour, is then broken up and then struggles to bring the film to a decent end. That works well, but could have been more exciting and interesting. But just, you had to bring the twist way too early ... "

- OutNow-CH

"Hollywood veteran Richard Gere and" The Wild Seventies "star Topher Grace are the reluctant buddy duo in this ambitious, but not in every surprising twist, credible spy thriller about an agent war in the best style of the Cold War that was believed to have been overcome. Not only does Gere play the role of the annoyed veteran, he could also be the villain, and from this uncertainty the film draws a lot of tension. Action-packed murder hunt with star power. "
