During this time he was selected in the first round of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft as the 14th player of the Buffalo Sabers .
For the Sabers he played from 1996 to 2006 in the National Hockey League . In the first three years in Buffalo, the defender also worked for their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Rochester Americans . During the lockout in the 2004/05 season, the left shooter paused ice hockey. After McKee ran for the St. Louis Blues from 2006 to 2009 , he received a one-year contract with the reigning Stanley Cup winner Pittsburgh Penguins on July 9, 2009 . In the summer of 2010, he finally ended his active career at the age of 32.
Immediately after the end of his career, McKee had interned as an assistant coach at Niagara University in the 2010/11 season . At the end of August 2011, he was then hired by his former team, the Rochester Americans , as an assistant coach. Between 2012 and 2014 he played again sporadically for the Dundas Real McCoys for the Allan Cup , which he won with the team in 2014. He was also the team's coach. For the 2014/15 season McKee returned behind the gang. He first worked for a year as an assistant coach with the Erie Otters and Kitchener Rangers in the OHL.
