Dragan "Dan" Kesa ( Serbian - Cyrillic Драган Кеса ; born November 23, 1971 in Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach with Serbian ancestors. During his active career between 1988 and 2003, he played 152 games for played the Vancouver Canucks , Dallas Stars , Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning as the right winger in the National Hockey League (NHL) . However, Kesa spent most of his career in the American Hockey League (AHL) and International Hockey League (IHL), where he played almost 550 games and celebrated his greatest career success in 1997 with the Detroit Vipers by winning the IHL Turner Cup . His nephew Milan Lucic is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Kesa spent his junior time from 1988 to 1990, first at the Richmond Sockeye in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League (BCJHL) before it it to the 1990/91 season for two seasons in the higher class Western Hockey League (WHL) to the Prince Albert Raiders moved . There the attacker developed into a hopeful power forward who was selected in the fifth round of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft in 95th place by the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL).

After finishing his junior career, Kesa moved to the professional field at the beginning of the 1992/93 season after receiving a contract from Vancouver. The right winger was mainly on the Hamilton Canucks farm team in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the first two years . During the game year 1993/94 Kesa made his debut in the NHL and came to 19 missions by the end of the season. The 1994/95 season he spent then in the new AHL farm team of Vancouver, the Syracuse Crunch . At first he could not add further NHL missions to his vita. In April 1995, Kesa moved through a transfer deal together with Greg Adams and a five-round suffrage in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft in the organization of the Dallas Stars , while the Canucks secured the services of Russ Courtnall . For Dallas and their farm team, the Michigan K-Wings , the striker came to only 18 games by November of the same year, including three for the stars in the NHL, before he was part of another transfer. In exchange for the Slovak Róbert Petrovický he was given to the Hartford Whalers .

There, too, Kesa did not make a breakthrough in the NHL until the summer of 1998. He played exclusively in the farm team Detroit Vipers in the International Hockey League (IHL), with which he celebrated his greatest career success at the end of the 1996/97 season when he won the championship trophy in the form of the Turner Cup . For Hartford, Kesa has not played a single game in the two and a half years. However, this changed for the 1998/99 season after he was signed as a free agent by the Pittsburgh Penguins for one year during the summer break . The now 27-year-old was used 67 times for the pens , but could not recommend a contract renewal. So he found a new employer in the Tampa Bay Lightning in September 1999 , who also used him regularly in the NHL, but also did not offer a follow-up contract. Kesa then came under the Manitoba Moose in the IHL, where he spent the 2000/01 season. Finally, the offensive player ended his career in Europe between 2001 and 2003. He spent a short period in the Russian Super League at HK Awangard Omsk , followed by his last professional season at the Austrian capital club Vienna Capitals in the Austrian Ice Hockey League (ÖEL).

After the end of his career, Kesa largely withdrew from ice hockey, but was in charge of the Serbian U20 national team at the U20 Junior World Championship of Division IIB in 2014 . With the team he finished third in the World Cup group.
