Career
Kirk Maltby began his career in 1989 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the Owen Sound Platers . In the 1992 NHL Entry Draft he was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the third round at position 65. He then played his first professional season in 1992/93 in the American Hockey League with the Cape Breton Oilers , a farm team of the Edmonton Oilers.
In the fall of 1993 he was a member of the Oilers' NHL squad and stayed with the team for two and a half years. In March 1996 he was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings . There he was part of the “ Grind Line ” around Darren McCarty and Kris Draper for many years . In his first full season in Detroit he was able to celebrate winning the Stanley Cup with the team in 1997 . The following year they were able to repeat the success.
Due to his tough style of play, he suffered several injuries and was only able to complete 82 games of a season in the 2001/02 season. In the 2002 playoffs , the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup for the third time in six years. The following years were largely injury-free and in 2002/03 Maltby had its best season with 37 scorer points. The number of points dropped significantly over the next few years, but alongside Kris Draper and Daniel Cleary he is an important part of the Red Wings checking line. In May 2007, the Detroit Red Wings extended Maltby's contract by three years. Maltby was the longest-serving Red Wing after Nicklas Lidström and Kris Draper, who was active in the 2009/10 season. In October 2010, the offensive player declared his active career over and now works as a scout for the Detroit Red Wings.
