Career

Marchant in the jersey of the Anaheim Ducks

Marchant played high school hockey at Williamsville East High School . From 1991 to 1993 he played two years in the National Collegiate Athletic Association for Clarkson University .

In the 1993 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the seventh round in 164th position by the New York Rangers . In his first professional season 1993/94 he played for the Rangers, their AHL team in Binghamton, the Oilers and their minor league team in Cape Breton. He joined the Oilers in March 1994 as an exchange for Craig MacTavish , who was his coach in Marchant's Edmonton senior years. Marchant played nine full seasons in the Oilers' shirt between 1994 and 2003, the last as an alternate captain . The striker caused a sensation when he scored the winning goal for the Oilers in the course of the 1996/97 season in the seventh encounter of the first play-off round against the Dallas Stars in extra time . His season with the best points in the Oilers jersey was in the 2002/03 season with 60 points in the regular season. This was also at the same time his most successful season in terms of points during his playing career. In July 2003 Marchant signed a contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets as a free agent . He played the entire 2003-04 season for Columbus.

Marchant refused to give up his no-trade clause , which would have allowed the Blue Jackets to barter him to Anaheim as part of a barter to send attacker Sergei Fyodorov . After the transfer trade, the Blue Jackets took Marchant off the roster to make room in the salary cap (Marchant made $ 2.5 million a year). On November 21, 2005, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim signed Marchant from the Waivers .

From the 2005/06 season Marchant played for the Ducks and won the Stanley Cup with them in the 2006/07 season . On June 29, 2011, he announced his retirement from active ice hockey and will henceforth act as Director of Player Development for the Anaheim Ducks.

Marchant was considered a defensive striker, especially his skills in outnumbered situations were highlighted.

International

Marchant represented the United States at the 1993 Junior World Championships and at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway . In addition, he spent most of the 1993/94 season in the training operations of the US ice hockey association USA Hockey to prepare for the Winter Olympics. He completed 59 games in which he reached 67 points.
