Greg Andrusak (born November 14, 1969 in Cranbrook , British Columbia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey defender . During his career he played for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League and for the Eisbären Berlin , Berlin Capitals and Hamburg Freezers in the German Ice Hockey League .
Career
Greg Andrusak was selected as the 88th overall player by the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 1988 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round . He began his career as an ice hockey player in the 1986/87 season with the Kelowna Packers of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League . From 1987 to 1992 Andrusak played both on the ice hockey team of the University of Minnesota Duluth , as well as the junior national team of Canada. In the summer of 1992, the Canadian was appointed to the roster of Pittsburgh's farm team , the Cleveland Lumberjacks from the International Hockey League , for which he was mainly active for the following three seasons. In the period up to 1996 he was only used twelve times in the National Hockey League by the Penguins. The rest of the time he spent in the IHL with the Detroit Vipers and Minnesota Moose .
From 1996 to 1999 the defender was under contract for the first time in Europe, where he was on the ice for the Eisbären Berlin for two years in the German Ice Hockey League . On March 19, 1999, Andrusak signed as a free agent at his ex-club, the Pittsburgh Penguins, after having already played for the Eisbären Berlin in the DEL, HC Servette Genève in the Swiss National League B and the Houston Eros from the International Hockey League this season played and won the Turner Cup . Since Andrusak only played seven games until the end of the 1998/99 season in the NHL, he moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 19, 1999 as a free agent . There, too, he was hardly used in the NHL, but played most of the season for the Chicago Wolves in the IHL, with whom he won his second Turner Cup.
In the summer of 2000, the San Jose Sharks signed the defender, who in the following season was only used for their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Kentucky Thoroughblades . The defender ended his career in Europe, where he first played in the 2001/02 season in the Swiss National League A for HC Lugano and then relegated from the DEL with the Berlin Capitals . The 2002/03 season spent Andrusak in their league rivals Hamburg Freezers , before his career with the EHC Chur ended in the National League B.
