During this time, Barnaby was considered one of the most notorious plagues of the sport in North America.
Career
Matthew Barnaby played in his youth for the Harfangs de Beauport , the Collège Français de Verdun and the Tigres de Victoriaville in the Canadian junior league Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . Already there, his game was characterized by a hard and provocative pace, in 1992 and 1993 he led the penalty minutes of the LHJMQ. The attacker completed a total of 180 games in the junior league, receiving 1186 penalty minutes. In the 1992 NHL Entry Draft , the winger was selected in the fourth round in a total of 83rd position by the Buffalo Sabers and made his debut in the National Hockey League late in the season 1992/93 . In the NHL, he built on his style of play from the youth league and received ten penalty minutes in two missions in the regular season, and another four in a play-off game. In the following season he played alternately in Buffalo and in the American Hockey League with the Sabers farm team , the Rochester Americans . He also spent most of the 1994/95 season in the AHL before he was finally able to establish himself in the NHL. The crowd favorite experienced his most successful season in the 1996/97 season , when he scored 19 goals and 43 points in 68 games despite 249 penalty minutes.
After nearly seven seasons, a total of 344 games and 1327 penalty minutes for the Buffalo Sabers, he was transferred to the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 11, 1999 in exchange for Stu Barnes . He played for the Penguins for three years before being sent to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the middle of the 2000/01 season , Pittsburgh received Wayne Primeau in return . In Florida , the Canadian could not build on his achievements and after only eight points from 58 missions he switched to the New York Rangers , where he quickly became a fan favorite. There were also no successes with the Rangers, after three seasons in New York without taking part in the play-offs, he was transferred to the Colorado Avalanche shortly before the end of the transfer period of the 2003/04 season together with a third-round draft pick for the 2004 NHL Entry Draft , the New York Rangers received in return David Liffiton , Chris McAllister and a second-round draft pick.
In July 2004, the attacker signed a three-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks , but the 2004/05 NHL season was completely canceled due to a lockout . At the end of the 2005/06 season , his contract was dissolved by the Blackhawks. Matthew Barnaby signed a contract with the Dallas Stars for the 2006/07 season , but the striker only played 39 games for the Texans after contracting a traumatic brain injury in a game against the Phoenix Coyotes in January 2007 . In July 2007, Barnaby announced his retirement from active sports as a result of this injury.
Between 2016 and 2018, Barnaby was the assistant coach of the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League .
