Michael Steven "Mike" Rathje (born May 11, 1974 in Mannville , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 845 games for the San Jose Sharks and Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League between 1990 and 2007 has denied on the position of defender . Rathje celebrated his greatest career success, who had already been selected in third overall position in the NHL Entry Draft 1992 , in the jersey of the Canadian U20 national team by winning the gold medal at the Junior World Championship in 1993 .

Career

Rathje first played from 1990 to 1993 in the Western Hockey League with the Medicine Hat Tigers . After he was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the NHL Entry Draft in 1992 in third position in the first round and had won the gold medal with the Canadian U20 national team at the Junior World Championship in 1993 , the Sharks brought him for the IHL playoffs in Spring 1993 to the Kansas City Blades , the farm team at the time .

The 1993/94 season , as well as the following two seasons, the Canadian always started with the Blades in the IHL, but also always got the chance to show his performances in the National Hockey League with the Sharks. In the 1996/97 season Rathje established himself in the NHL, although he had to pause for a long time because of a groin injury that he suffered at the beginning of the season. He stayed in San Jose until the end of the 2003/04 season and developed into one of the pillars of the Northern California team. Ironically, it had its best season, measured by its offensive performance, in 2002/03 , when San Jose had one of the worst seasons in franchise history .

After the NHL lockout 2004/05 , in which Rathje did not play ice hockey, he signed a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers in August 2005 . Due to his chronic back and hip problems, he played only a few games for Philadelphia in the 2006/07 season . The 2007/08 season he was completely out.

Rathje held the franchise record for most games in the jersey of the San Jose Sharks until the 2006/07 season before he was replaced by Patrick Marleau . With eleven seasons he has played for more years than any other player in San Jose and is still the defender with the most points.
