Daniel "Dan" McGillis (born July 1, 1972 in Hawkesbury , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 698 games for the Edmonton Oilers , Philadelphia Flyers , San Jose Sharks , Boston Bruins during his active career between 1989 and 2010 and New Jersey Devils played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . He was also active for Adler Mannheim from the German Ice Hockey League . McGillis celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Canadian association selection when he won the prestigious Spengler Cup in 1995 .

Career

McGillis first played from 1989 to 1992 in the Eastern Ontario- based Central Junior A Hockey League with the Hawkesbury Hawks . Although his performance was unimpressive, who chose him Detroit Red Wings in the NHL Entry Draft in 1992 in the tenth round at the 238th position. Despite his age of 20 years, the Canadian decided against a professional contract and moved to Boston Northeastern University , where he completed his studies and at the same time played for the university team in the Hockey East of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . After four years and appealing statistics, which brought him one appointment in 1995 and two in 1996 in the various All-Star Teams of the NCAA.

After the transfer rights to his person had been transferred in exchange for Kirk Maltby from the Red Wings to the Edmonton Oilers in March 1996 , McGillis signed his first professional contract with the Oilers before the 1995/96 season at the age of 24. There the defender established himself in the NHL squad right away and made 73 appearances in his rookie season . The Canadian also spent the 1996/97 season with the Oilers before he was given to the Philadelphia Flyers for Janne Niinimaa during the season just before the end of the transfer window . The defender stayed on the US west coast until the 2002/03 game year and had by far his best NHL year in the 2000/01 season with 49 points in 82 games. Since McGillis could not build on this performance in the following two years, the Flyers decided in December 2002 to transfer McGillis for Marcus Ragnarsson to the San Jose Sharks , which were in upheaval after a botched start to the season. Since the team did not improve with the arrival of the Canadian, he had to leave the team after only 37 games. The left shooter was given to the Boston Bruins , who in return sent a second-round draft vote to San Jose. With the Bruins, his statistics improved again slightly by the end of the 2003/04 season .

Due to the NHL lockout in the 2004/05 season , McGillis sat out the entire year and signed a contract with the New Jersey Devils , one of the strongest teams in the Eastern Conference , before the 2005/06 season . Initially, the Canadian was also part of the NHL squad, but after a disappointing record of only six assists in 27 games, the Devils management pushed him to the American Hockey League . McGillis spent the remainder of the year there with the Devils farm team , the Albany River Rats . In the 2006/07 season he had to be content again with a regular place in the AHL. The Canadian scored 41 points in 68 games for the Lowell Devils , but his contract, which expired in the summer of 2007, was not extended and McGillis could not recommend himself to the Vancouver Canucks , who invited him with a so-called try-out contract . The Canadian then signed a contract with Adler Mannheim from the DEL in October , which was later extended to the end of the 2008/09 season. After the Adler separated from McGillis after the expiry of the contract, the defender signed another contract with his ex-club from the DEL in January 2010. At the end of the 2009/10 season, however, his contract was not extended.
