Jason Mark Muzzatti (born February 3, 1970 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a former Italo - Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and current coach . During his career he played for the Calgary Flames , Hartford Whalers , New York Rangers and San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League , Tappara Tampere in the SM-liiga and the Eisbären Berlin and Augsburger Panther in the German Ice Hockey League .

Career

Jason Muzzatti initially studied for four years from 1987 to 1991 at Michigan State University , for whose ice hockey team he played parallel in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In 1989 and 1990 he won the CCHA championship with his team. Between 1988 and 1990 the Canadian was appointed to one of the numerous All-Star teams three times. Previously it had been the Calgary Flames in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft selected in the first round of 21 place.

After completing his college years, the Italian-Canadian switched to the professional camp and ran for the Salt Lake Golden Eagles in the International Hockey League , which were the farm team of the Calgary Flames at the time. The 1993/94 season he then spent with the Saint John Flames in the American Hockey League , another Calgary farm team, who called him in the NHL squad for the first time in the course of the season and used him once. The lockout- shortened season 1994/95 was similar , while he was mainly used in the AHL, he came again to an NHL mission.

However, since the Calgary Flames were not satisfied with the development of their first-round draft pick, they put him on the waiver list before the start of the 1995/96 season . From there he was selected by the Hartford Whalers , who mostly used him as a back-up on the NHL team. So he came this season to 22 appearances in the NHL, of which he could only win four. Still employed as a back-up behind Sean Burke , he was 31 times in the Whalers' goal in the 1996/97 game year , but with only nine wins again could not quite meet expectations.

In the summer of 1997 the Hartford Whalers were relocated to North Carolina and from then on played as the Carolina Hurricanes . Since Muzzatti had publicly criticized the relocation and could no longer identify with the new franchise , the Hurricanes transferred him to the New York Rangers for a fourth-round draft pick before the start of the season . This used him six times in the 1997/98 season , but since Muzzatti finished none of the games as a winner, he was given in March 1998 in exchange for Rich Brennan to the US west coast to the San Jose Sharks . After another assignment there, he left North America and moved to Europe.

On the European continent, he signed a contract with the Eisbären Berlin from the German Ice Hockey League , but due to a heart operation, he was out for large parts of the 1998/99 season . The following year he moved to the Finnish SM-liiga , where he played for Tappara Tampere , only to return to Germany after only one year, this time to the Augsburg Panthers . In the summer of 2001, the goalkeeper moved to Italy for Serie A1 . He was in the goal of HC Milano Vipers for three years, with whom he celebrated three Italian championship titles between 2002 and 2004 before moving to HC Bozen within the league .

In the summer of 2006, Muzzatti turned his back on the Italian league and headed back to North America. There he signed the Flint Generals from the United Hockey League , which has since been renamed the International Hockey League. After Muzzatti had ended his active career with the Flint Generals after the 2006/07 season , he began his coaching career in the 2008/09 season as an assistant coach for the Flint Generals. A season later he was the head coach of the team and made it with the team in the playoffs, in which they were defeated in the finals against the Fort Wayne Komets . Muzzatti was then voted IHL's Trainer of the Year.

International

His good performances in Serie A brought Muzzatti the first nomination for the Italian national team in 2004 after he had already played a few games with the Canadian national team in the 1992/93 season . Muzzatti represented the Italians at the B World Championships in 2004 and 2005 . He also took part in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin and played in the A-World Championship in 2006 , after having been promoted in 2005.
