Edward Reginald "Reg" Noble (born June 23, 1895 in Collingwood , Ontario ; † January 29, 1962 ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who from 1917 to 1933 for the Toronto Arenas or Toronto St. Patricks, Montréal Canadiens , Montreal Maroons and Detroit Cougars , Detroit Falcons and Detroit Red Wings played in the National Hockey League .

Career

Noble began his professional career in 1916 in the National Hockey Association with the Toronto Blueshirts . After disputes between the team owner and the league officials, which led to the exclusion of the Blueshirts, he moved to the Montréal Canadiens . He scored four goals in his six appearances for the Canadiens, but his move came too late to travel with the team to the Stanley Cup finals. So he missed the trip to Seattle, where the Seattle Metropolitans were the first US team to win the Stanley Cup against Montréal.

After the end of the season, the NHA was dissolved and the remaining teams formed the National Hockey League . Also in Toronto, a new team was founded with the Toronto Arenas , which he joined. With 30 goals in 20 games, he was third in the NHL scorer list for the 1917/18 season . With his two goals in the playoffs, he helped the Arenas become the first NHL team to win the Stanley Cup. For the 1919/20 season , the team was renamed Toronto St. Patricks. Noble was very successful again with 24 goals in 24 games. Together with Babe Dye and Corb Denneny he formed one of the best storm series of his time. Noble was a crowd-pleaser at the Mutual Street Arena . One of his specialties was to take the puck from his opponents. One of his fans had a siren in the stadium that howled every time he succeeded. The fans celebrated these scenes almost as euphorically as goals. In the 1921/22 season , the St. Pats were able to prevail against the Ottawa Senators and represent the NHL in the Stanley Cup Finals. In the series against Ottawa, the last NHL game took place on natural ice. In the Stanley Cup Finals, the St. Pats won against the Vancouver Maroons. He was also temporarily active as a player-coach in Toronto.

For $ 8,000, he moved to the Montreal Maroons shortly after the start of the 1924/25 season . Here he took on a much more defensive role in the team than before. In the second year with the team of the richer English-speaking Montreal team, he was able to win his third Stanley Cup. He stayed there for another year and moved to the Detroit Cougars for $ 7,500 for the 1927/28 season . He defended for Detroit until the 1932/33 season . The team that was temporarily called the Falcons now played under the new name Detroit Red Wings. He played five games for the Red Wings before the Montreal Maroons brought him back for John Gallagher . There he ended his last NHL season, in which he remained without a scorer point. He was the last active player to have played in the NHL's premier season.

In 1933 he moved to the Cleveland Indians in the International American Hockey League , where he ended his active career. For another two years he returned to the NHL as a referee .

In 1962 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
