Michael Edward "Mickey" Redmond (born December 27, 1947 in Kirkland Lake , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (right winger) who played for the Montréal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League from 1967 to 1976 . His brother Dick also played in the NHL.

Career

During his junior years Redmond played together with André Lacroix at the Peterborough Petes in the OHA .

After a few games with the Houston Apollos in the CPHL , he made the leap into the squad of the Montreal Canadiens during the 1966/67 season . In this star-studded team, he developed into a strong NHL player and won the Stanley Cup twice . When the Canadiens wanted to bring Frank Mahovlich back from Detroit, he had to move to the Detroit Red Wings with Guy Charron, among others .

At first he was plagued by injuries, but he fought his way back and represented the NHL team at the 1972 Summit Series . In the 1972/73 season he was the first player in the Red Wings jersey to score over 50 goals in one season, and the following year he proved with 51 hits that it was not a flash in the pan. As a result, back pain plagued him. Still he tried to keep playing. The performance deteriorated and on closer examination it was found that his ambition had caused permanent damage. A nerve that went into the leg was permanently damaged and prevented him from walking.

After his career as an ice hockey player, he switched to television and commented on the show Hockey Night in Canada .
