Homosexuality is widely accepted in Argentina. In the capital Buenos Aires is a greater LGBT - community . Homosexual acts are legal in Argentina . The age of consent is uniformly 13 years.

Anti-discrimination laws

There are no anti-discrimination laws protecting sexual orientation at the federal level . On the other hand, in the capital Buenos Aires and the city of Rosario there are local anti-discrimination laws.

Recognition of same-sex marriages

Since 2003, same-sex couples have been able to enter into a registered partnership in the autonomous city of Buenos Aires, Río Negro and in the cities of Villa Carlos Paz and Río Cuarto in the province of Córdoba . These partnerships give largely the same rights as marriage. Joint adoption, however, is not possible. Nationwide, in a decree from the end of 2008, same-sex couples who have lived together for at least 5 years will be recognized in the pension insurance.

At the end of December 2009, the first homosexual couple married in Ushuaia . The pair Alex Freye and Jose Maria di Bello became the first couple in South America , the same-sex marriage one.

On May 5, 2010, the Argentine parliament approved the nationwide introduction of same-sex marriage. The law on the opening of marriage was also adopted by a majority of the senators in the Argentine Senate. President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner signed the law on July 21, 2010.

Until the 1980s, homosexual people in Argentina were suppressed and subjected to police harassment. During the military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983 in particular , there was a system of oppression by the military that also massively injured homosexual people. Since the end of the dictatorship in Argentina and the democratization of the country, the situation for homosexual people has steadily improved. In the capital Buenos Aires is a LGBT - community and organizations such as Comunidad Homosexual Argentina stand up for the rights of homosexuals in the country.
