Homosexuality in Suriname

Homosexuality is legal in Suriname , but socially taboo. Gay relationships in particular are rarely accepted and tolerated.

  • Homosexuality is legal in Suriname . Section 302 of the Criminal Code makes homosexual acts with a person under the age of 18 a punishable offense for up to 4 years. The age of consent for heterosexuals is 16 years.

    Same-sex couples are not recognized by the state. No law of same-sex marriage or registered partnership is permitted in Suriname . There is no anti-discrimination law to protect sexual orientation .

    Social situation

    In contrast to the rejection of gay contacts, there is less prejudice against homosexual women. "Matis" ( Sranan for intimate girlfriends) relationships are an ancient and accepted practice among Afro-Surinamers.

    A small LGBT community can be found in the capital Paramaribo . In October 2011, the country's first Gay Pride took place in the capital .
