In 2013, the openly gay Wally Brewster took office as the new US ambassador to the Dominican Republic. This resulted in protests and verbal attacks on the part of Catholics and Evangelicals . Commenting on Brewster's mission, Cardinal Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez said: "Are we going from fagots and lesbians to chickens?"
In Voodoo , which, unlike in neighboring Haiti, forms a religious minority , all sexual orientations, including the practiced homosexuality, are equal .
