Homosexuality in Colombia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Geographical location of Colombia

The rights of homosexuals in Colombia are well developed, especially for a developing, conservative and predominantly Catholic country like Colombia .

legality

There are no criminal laws against homosexual acts in Colombia . The age of consent for homosexual and heterosexual acts is uniformly 14 years.

Anti-discrimination laws

Homosexual people are allowed to serve in the armed forces of Colombia .

State recognition of same-sex couples

The Constitutional Court of Colombia ( Corte Constitucional de Colombia ) declared a discriminatory regulation of inheritance law to be unconstitutional on February 19, 2007. Further legal disputes are being pursued through gay and lesbian civil rights movements in order to obtain the same rights as marriage. A registered partnership law passed Congress on June 15, 2007. President Álvaro Uribe Vélez had previously announced that he would sign the law.

In September 2013, government authorities allowed same-sex couples to have same-sex marriages for the first time , after the Constitutional Court of Colombia set lawmakers a 2013 deadline to allow same- sex marriages in 2011 . In November 2015, the Constitutional Court of Colombia allowed the joint adoption of illegitimate children by same-sex couples.

marriage

In July 2011, the Constitutional Court of Colombia ruled that same-sex couples have the right to same-sex marriage . The judgment obliged the parliament of Colombia to pass a law on opening marriage by June 20, 2013. Thus, same-sex couples automatically got the right to marriage by going to a notary or judge in Colombia. In the course of 2013, various judges made it possible to allow first same-sex marriages. In April 2016, the Constitutional Court confirmed the immediate nationwide marriage opening in a further landmark decision.

Social situation

There is a large and lively gay and lesbian scene in the big cities of Bogotá , Medellín , Cali , Cartagena and Barranquilla . In Bogotá, most of the bars, discos and clubs are concentrated in the Barrio Chapinero in central Bogotá.

The gay and lesbian movement is still developing. In the national university, however, there is already a group that advocates equality.

In addition, there has been the Ciclo Rosa event since 2001 , which, divided into a cinema and conference program, aims to work towards reducing discrimination.

In May 2009, Radio Diversia , the first gay radio station in Colombia, ceased operations after a year and a half. Systematic death threats were issued by a group called “Organization”, which attacks left-wing groups, prostitutes and homosexuals alike in leaflets and is suspected of being behind former members of right-wing paramilitary groups. The director of the station, Carlos Serrano, felt compelled to leave the country.
