from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Homosexuality is widely accepted by society in Canada . Canadian society is considered to be one of the most liberal in the world.

legality

After a 1964 bill by the Canadian House of Commons Arnold Peters to legalize homosexuality failed, homosexual acts were legalized in 1967 . The basis for this was the Bill C-150 , which was initiated by the then Justice Minister and later Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau . The age of consent from 1982 to 2008 was 14 years. The conservative government decided in 2007 to increase it to 16 years and at the same time introduced a regulation according to which there is only criminal liability if there is an age difference of more than 5 years. The law came into force after the royal signature. Anal intercourse is prohibited for and with under 18-year-olds; however, the rules are the same as for heterosexuals .

Anti-discrimination laws

The sexual identity is protected in the Constitution of Canada ( Section 15 of the Charter ). The unequal treatment of people based on their sexual orientation is prohibited. Homosexual people are permitted for military service.
