Basiliscus the Younger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basiliscus the Younger ( Middle Greek Βασιλίσκος , on coins Leo Caesar ) was 476–477 / 78 sub-emperor of the Eastern Roman emperor Zenon .

In August 476, Zenon dethroned the opposing emperor Basiliscus with military help and regained power in Constantinople . The incumbent consul Armatus , a nephew of Basiliscus, had previously defected to Zenon. In return, the younger basiliscus, son of Armatus, was elevated to Caesar in the autumn of 476 in Nicaia . Since his birth name was politically discredited, he was given the new name Leo in memory of Zenon's son, who had died two years earlier ; as Leo Novus Caesar he appears on coins together with Zenon. Due to the intrigues of Illus , Armatus fell out of favor with Zenon a little later and was murdered. Basiliscus Leo was deposed and put into the priestly robe; after Euagrios Scholastikos he later became bishop of Kyzikos .
