Sandeman is a trading company for wine and spirits , particularly Spanish and Portuguese southern wines ( sherry , port wine and Madeira ), but also brandy and Douro - reds .

The company was founded in 1790 in London by the Scot George Sandeman as an import company for port and sherry. Branches were soon established in Spain (1795 in Cádiz ) and Portugal (1811 in Vila Nova de Gaia ).

The company has been part of the Sogrape Group since 2002 .

The company's distinguishing mark since 1928 has been the black silhouette of a Zorro- like man in a hat and long coat, who brings a wine glass to his mouth, called The Don. The Caballero hat stands for the Spanish, the black student cape for the Portuguese areas of the company. The Don was designed in 1928 by George Massiot-Brown.
