After he did not make it into the squad for the 1971/72 season , however, he was given to the Chicago Black Hawks .

When he founded the World Hockey Association , he decided to seek his fortune there. With the Philadelphia Blazers he became the first top scorer in the league. In the second season he played for the New York Golden Blades , one of the weakest teams in the WHA. But even here he managed to shine. He managed 111 points and led the league with 80 assists. The team moved to New Jersey during the season and later to San Diego, and so he played for the San Diego Mariners for three years from the 1974/75 season before moving to the Houston Eros . The final season of the WHA he played with the New England Whalers . No other player played more games in the WHA than he did, and he also held the top scores in the points and templates categories.

He stayed with his team, which was now called Hartford Whalers in the NHL , for 29 games before ending his career.
