Career
In his youth, Jack Darragh played for the Ottawa Stewartons in a junior league in the Canadian province of Ontario . On November 27, 1910, he signed a contract with the Ottawa Senators from the National Hockey Association (NHA) as a non-contract player . In his first NHA season he won the Stanley Cup with his new team . Darragh played 16 games this season, scoring 18 goals.
In the following four years, the Ottawa Senators reached a Stanley Cup finals only once; In 1915 , after three games, they were clearly defeated by the Vancouver Millionaires from the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) in a best-of-five series. After the dissolution of the NHA and the formation of the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1917/18 , Jack Darragh won his second Stanley Cup with the Ottawa Senators in the 1919/20 NHL season , after the team won the Seattle Metropolitans in the Stanley Cup final from the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA). For the Senators it was the eighth overall win of this trophy; for Jack Darragh personally, this season was also his most successful with 36 scorer points in 23 completed games in the regular season .
The Senators were able to repeat their Stanley Cup success in the following season , after the team won the final against the PCHA challenger Vancouver Millionaires. Ottawa won the fifth and decisive game of this series 2-1, Darragh scored both goals for the Senators. After this season, the Canadian sat out ice hockey for a year, the Senators lost the NHL final against the Toronto St. Patricks this season .
Darragh returned to the Ottawa Senators for the 1922-23 NHL season . The Senators finished the regular season in first place in the table and met the Edmonton Eskimos from the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) in the Stanley Cup final . Ottawa won the best-of-three series with 2-0 victories. After his fourth Stanley Cup success, the left shooter completed another season in the National Hockey League, in which he could no longer build on his usual performance.
After this season, the winger ended his career. In his 13-season professional career, he won the Stanley Cup four times with the Ottawa Senators, and from 1916 to 1919 he was the team captain of the Senators. Darragh was considered a very good skater who had good stick control and a good backhand shot. In addition, he was one of the few players at the time who was used as a left-handed player as a right winger. At a time when ice hockey was played very bitterly and brutally, he also had a reputation as a peace-loving player.
A few months after retiring from his career in 1924, Jack Darragh died at the age of 33 from peritonitis caused by a ruptured appendix . In 1962 he was inducted posthumously into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
