Career

Long in the jersey of the Detroit Red Wings

Robert Lang began his career at HC Litvínov in the first division and was selected in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings in the seventh round in 133rd position. For the 1992/93 season he moved to North America, but still played frequently in the first two years with the Phoenix Roadrunners , the Kings farm team , in the IHL .

After the 1995/96 season , Lang's stint in Los Angeles ended with moderate success and he returned to Europe. After a season with HC Sparta Prague , he tried again in the USA. In addition to a short trip to the Boston Bruins for three games , the Pittsburgh Penguins were his new team. He was able to improve steadily and so he finally managed to establish himself as a permanent fixture in the NHL in the five years in Pittsburgh.

In 2002 he moved to the Washington Capitals . Shortly before the end of his second season in the capital, when he led the scorers of the league and was appointed to the NHL All-Star Game in 2004 , the Detroit Red Wings signed him . Then he was honored with the Zlatá hokejka as the best Czech player. In the 2006/07 season he was able to advance with the Red Wings to the final of the Western Conference . In the summer of 2007, he received no new contract in Detroit and moved to the Chicago Blackhawks , where he was able to build on the performance of the previous season with 54 points in 76 games, but missed the playoffs with the team. After only one year in Chicago, Lang was transferred to the Canadiens de Montréal in September 2008 . A season in Montréal was followed by a final season with the Phoenix Coyotes before ending his active career in 2010.

In December 2015, Robert Lang was inducted into the Czech Ice Hockey Hall of Fame .
