At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano ( Japan ), the ice hockey competitions consisted of a women's tournament for the first time in addition to the men's ice hockey tournament .
For the men's tournament, negotiations between the IOC and the International Ice Hockey Federation ( IIHF ) with the North American professional league NHL ensured that the NHL took a break for the first time during the winter games. In return, the big six ice hockey nations were set for the final round and only had to intervene in the action a week later.

The games of the Olympic ice hockey tournaments were played in two ice stadiums in Nagano, which were newly built on the occasion of the games .
