The Olympic ice hockey tournament of the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo ( Norway ) is considered the 19th ice hockey world championship and 30th ice hockey European championship . It took place from February 15 to 25, 1952. Most of the games were played in the newly built Jordal Amfi ice rink, only a few duels took place in places outside Oslo. Nine teams took part in this tournament, ten had named, but Italy was missing. For the first time after the Second World War , the Federal Republic of Germany was allowed to take part in the tournament again.
In contrast, the National Austrian Olympic Committee let the entry date November 30, 1951 pass.

The tournament was carried out in league play. Canada won its sixth Olympic gold medal in ice hockey and the world title at the same time. It was not until 2002 that another triumph was achieved. The silver medal went to the USA , which was able to rehabilitate itself for its disappointing performance at the last Olympics .
On the last day, a hot weather had prevented the match between Norway and Poland, which was played on February 25th from 11 a.m.
The bronze medal was also decided in a play-off, which made it necessary to extend it to Monday, February 25th, after European champions Sweden and two-time world champions Czechoslovakia had finished the tournament tied. Sweden was successful in this duel 5-3, so that the silver medalist from 1948 was without a medal this time. The ČSR had already led 3-0 in the middle third.
With regard to this play-off, there were initially problems with the interpretation of the rules, because it was said that the Olympic tournament would be decided on the basis of the goal difference, the Monday encounter only concerned the European Championship. This interpretation would only have applied if three teams had tied on points.
The Swiss performance is disappointing . The medal candidate ended up only in the middle of the table. The heyday of Swiss ice hockey was thus over for a long time.

Statement by the representative of the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation

Dr. Max Thoma from the Swiss Ice Hockey Association said in a review in “Sport Zürich” no. 25 of February 27, 1952, page 3 that he “had become aware in the course of the tournament that a certain degree of maturity was still lacking to be able to cope with such tough challenges Struggle to stay successful. Against Sweden and the ČSR it would certainly have been possible to win, but in both games a full daredevil on the part of the opponent for 5 to 10 minutes was enough to confuse the Swiss. It has to be possible to overcome psychologically dangerous moments, for this the ability to realize has to be increased. "
