George Abel

George Gordon Abel (born February 23, 1916 in Melville , Saskatchewan , † April 16, 1996 ibid) was a Canadian ice hockey player . At the 1952 Winter Olympics , he won the gold medal as a member of the Canadian national team. His younger brother Sid Abel was also a hockey player.

Career

George Abel began his career as a hockey player in the 1930s with the Flin Flon Bombers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League . He then took a break from active ice hockey and ran a transportation company in Saskatchewan with his brothers Don and Lawrence. In 1946 he joined the Melville Millionaires from his hometown, for whom he ran up over the next ten years until 1956. In 1952 he represented Canada as a guest player with the Edmonton Mercurys at the Winter Olympics.

International

For Canada Abel took part in the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo , where he won the gold medal with his team. In eight games he scored six goals and six assists.
