Stefan Csorich

Stefan "Papa" Csorich (born September 25, 1921 in Nowy Sącz , † July 15, 2008 in Danzig ) was a Polish ice hockey player and coach . His grandson Marian Csorich is also a Polish international.

Career

Stefan Csorich started his career as an ice hockey player in the youth department of KTH Krynica . During the attack on Poland he was taken prisoner by Germany . Via Hungary and France he managed to escape to Switzerland, where he played ice hockey for the EHC Chur and the Young Sprinters Hockey Club . He then fought on the French side towards the end of World War II . When he was sent to the UK, he played ice hockey for the Dundee Tigers and Falkirk Lions. In October 1946 he returned to Poland and played there from 1946 to 1960 for his ex-club KTH Krynica. In the 1949/50 season he won the Polish championship title with KTH .

As head coach, Csorich looked after his parent club KTH Krynica and Podhale Nowy Targ until 1965 . He also looked after the Polish national team from 1961 to 1963. From 1965 to 1972 he worked in the same position for KS Cracovia and then from 1972 to 1980 for Stoczniowiec Gdańsk . In his later life he was honored, among other things, with the distinction of Knight of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the appointment of Honored Master of Sports .

International

For the Polish national ice hockey team , Csorich took part in the Winter Olympics in St. Moritz in 1948 and in Oslo in 1952 . He was also in his country's squad at the World Championships in 1947 , 1955 and 1957 . Between 1946 and 1957 he played a total of 52 internationals for Poland and scored 34 goals.
