Andrej Meszároš (born October 13, 1985 in Považská Bystrica , Czechoslovakia ) is a Slovak ice hockey player who has been under contract with HC Slovan Bratislava in the Continental Hockey League and the Slovak Extraliga (since 2019) since August 2016 .
Career
Andrej Meszároš began his career with the Slovak club HC Dukla Trenčín in the Slovakian extra league , with which he became Slovak champion in the 2003/04 season , before being selected by the Senators as the 23rd player in the first round in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft ( drafted ) has been.
Due to the lockout in the 2004/05 season Andrej Meszároš could not gain NHL experience and so he played with the Vancouver Giants in the Western Hockey League . A year later he played his first games for the Senators and was soon part of the permanent staff in Ottawa due to his strong defensive skills and perfect puck control . As the second best rookie defender of the 2005/06 season , the left-handed shooter was also elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team . Furthermore, Meszároš was nominated for the "Young Stars Game", which took place in the framework of the NHL All-Star Game 2007 , and was part of the starting line-up of the Eastern Conference team .
In the summer of 2008, a transfer business brought him to the Tampa Bay Lightning , which in return gave Filip Cuba and Alexandre Picard to Ottawa. On July 1, 2010, he was given to the Philadelphia Flyers , in exchange, the Lightning received a second-round vote for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
On March 5, 2014, just before the trade deadline , the Flyers swapped him for a third-round suffrage for the Boston Bruins . On his debut for the Bruins four days later, he scored a power play goal against the Florida Panthers . After the season he moved to the Buffalo Sabers , with whom he signed a one-year contract that was not extended in the sequence. Subsequently, the Slovak left North America after more than ten years and joined the HK Sibir Novosibirsk from the Continental Hockey League , where he signed a one-year contract. In 37 KHL games for Sibir, he scored 7 goals and 4 assists.
International
For the Slovak national ice hockey team Andrej Meszároš took part in the ice hockey world championship in 2004 and in the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin . There he was the second youngest participant in the Olympic ice hockey tournament behind the Russian Yevgeny Malkin . Four years later, the defender also took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics and was part of the Slovak squad at the 2015 World Cup .
At the U-18 World Championships in 2003 he also won the silver medal with the Slovak team.
