Thomas Joseph Preissing (born December 3, 1978 in Arlington Heights , Illinois ) is a retired American ice hockey player .
Career
Until 1999 Tom Preissing played in the United States Hockey League with the Green Bay Gamblers and did well, but he did not get into the NHL Entry Draft . From the summer of 1999, he went to Colorado College . There he played for four years for the Hockey Team and was even in his time at college once for the Hobey Baker Award nominations , which will be awarded to the best college players. His last year was also his best. He led the team as team captain and scored 52 points in 42 games.
After he had left college in 2003, he received a contract with the San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League and was able to assert himself in the squad, so that he played the entire season in the NHL. The 2004/05 NHL season was canceled because of the lockout . In order to get match practice anyway, he moved, like many NHL players, to Europe. Preissing received a contract with the Krefeld Penguins in the DEL .
The 2005/06 season he played back to San Jose after the lockout was over, and it went very well for him with 43 points in 74 games. That was the second highest value a Sharks defender could ever achieve at the time.
In the summer of 2006, Preissing was part of a transfer deal between the San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks, and Ottawa Senators . Ottawa sent Bryan Smolinski and Martin Havlát to Chicago, but the Blackhawks sent Mark Bell to the Sharks and Michal Barinka and a draft pick to Ottawa. Tom Preissing eventually had to join the Ottawa Senators along with teammate Josh Hennessy .
Tom Preissing is one of the defenders who also attract attention on the offensive. In Ottawa he often played with Christoph Schubert in a defense line. Preissing played an important role in the defense of the Senators and at the end of the season had the best plus / minus value among the NHL defenders with +40 . The Senators advanced to the final of the Stanley Cup , in which they were subject to the Anaheim Ducks .
In the summer of 2007 Preissing returned to California and signed a contract with the Los Angeles Kings , where he played until 2009. This was followed by a move to the Lake Erie Monsters . After just one season, he left the club and moved overseas. First for one season with EHC Biel in the National League A , then for half a season each with Rögle BK ( SHL ) and Turun Palloseura ( Liiga ). In 2013, Preissing announced his resignation.
