Martin Havlát ( IPA : [ˈmarcɪn ˈɦavlaːt]; born April 19, 1981 in Mladá Boleslav , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player . The right winger played 865 games in the National Hockey League , the majority of them for the Ottawa Senators , Chicago Blackhawks , Minnesota Wild and San Jose Sharks . Havlát became world champion with the Czech national team in 2000 and took part in two Winter Olympic Games .
Career
Martin Havlát began his career in 1996 in the Czech U18 league, where he played for Ytong Brno . In the 1997/98 season he played his first five games for the U20 team from Brno and was able to convince there, as he scored twelve points. In 1998 he moved to HC Třinec for which he was used both in the U20 league, but also with the professionals in the Extraliga . The talent scouts of the National Hockey League had become aware of him and so he was selected in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators in the first round at position 26. He played in Třinec for another year before moving to North America in the summer of 2000.
With the Ottawa Senators he was able to establish himself immediately and was nominated for the Calder Memorial Trophy as best rookie at the end of the season . In 2002 he took part in the Olympic Winter Games with the Czech national team. From year to year he was able to increase his points. In the 2003/04 season he came to 68 points in 68 games. Havlát was suspended for a total of four games during the season. For two games after he hit opponent Mark Recchi with his bat in the face and for another two games when he kicked an opponent.
The 2004/05 NHL season was canceled because of the lockout and Havlát went to Europe like many players to play ice hockey. He spent the season at home with HC Znojemští Orli and HC Sparta Prague , and in Russia with Dynamo Moscow .
The NHL resumed play for the 2005/06 season and Havlát also returned to North America. But after a few games he had to serve another suspension because he had kicked an opponent. For five games he was not allowed to intervene in the game. In his first game after his suspension, he scored four goals in a 10: 4 against the Buffalo Sabers . Overall, he got eleven points in the eleven games after his suspension, but then he sustained a serious shoulder injury, which is why he had to take a four-month break. He returned shortly before the end of the regular season in April 2006. In the playoffs he was able to show what he can do and scored 13 times in ten games.
After the season, Havlát's contract expired and it was announced that he would only sign with the Senators for one year. On the one hand, the management of the Senators found the contract term too short; on the other hand, they had to find a replacement for him as quickly as possible. The Senators then entered into a transfer deal with the Chicago Blackhawks and the San Jose Sharks . The Sharks would be given to Ottawa Tom Preissing and Josh Hennessy , Ottawa would transfer Havlát and Bryan Smolinski to Chicago and Chicago would send Mark Bell to San Jose.
On October 5, 2006 Havlat made his debut with the Blackhawks and was able to inspire with two goals and two assists . After two weeks and seven games, he led the league with 13 points, but then he injured his ankle and fell out for a long time. On December 9th, he made his comeback and scored twice again, but his team lost. The Blackhawks missed the playoffs quite clearly at the end of the season and Havlát was the team's best scorer with 57 points, although he could only play 56 games.
The 2007/08 season was also marked by injuries. Immediately after the first game of the season, Havlát was sidelined for almost two months with a shoulder injury and did not return to the ice until the end of November, but less than four weeks later he was sidelined for six games due to an injury to the groin. Havlát played in 35 games until the end of February 2008 and showed good performances with ten goals and 17 assists. However, he had to end the season prematurely due to a shoulder operation.
In the 2008/09 season he was in 81 games for the Blackhawks, scored 29 goals and collected 77 points. In the playoffs he drew attention to himself with 15 points in 16 games, but lost in the conference finals in five games against the Detroit Red Wings . At the end of the season, he found no agreement with the Chicago Blackhawks about a contract extension and Havlát signed on July 1, 2009 a contract for six years with the Minnesota Wild , which will bring him 30 million dollars. In the 2009/10 season he made 73 appearances for the game and scored 54 points.
In July 2011, the management of the Wild swapped him for Dany Heatley of the San Jose Sharks . After three years in San Jose, the Sharks prematurely terminated his contract in the summer of 2014, so that he joined the New Jersey Devils in July . There he fulfilled his one-year contract, but did not receive a further contract in New Jersey. As a result, he was without a new club for several months until he joined the St. Louis Blues on a trial basis in October 2015 , which then signed him for a year in November. After only one week and two competitive games for the Blues, the Czech's contract was terminated for personal reasons.
In February 2017, Havlát finally announced the official end of his playing career.
