Ryan Whitney (born February 19, 1983 in Scituate , Massachusetts ) is a retired American ice hockey player . Whitney played 519 games in the National Hockey League , mostly for the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Edmonton Oilers . With the national team of the USA he won the silver medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games .

Career

After the 1.84 m tall defender had completed various American youth development programs, he played for Boston University in the league operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft as fifth in the first round by the Penguins .

First Whitney was used in the American Hockey League with the farm team of the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , for which he also played in the lockout season 2004/05 . In the 2005/06 season he finally completed his first NHL appearances for Pittsburgh after he had moved to the team for the injured Dick Tärnström . Due to his good performance, he was one of the permanent staff of the Penguins even after Tärnström had recovered.

During the 2006/07 season Whitney was nominated for the "Young Stars Game" taking place in the framework of the 55th NHL All-Star Game , in which he ran up in the starting line-up of the Eastern Conference team.

On January 26, 2009 he was transferred to the Anaheim Ducks for Chris Kunitz and Eric Tangradi . Only a year later, the Ducks gave him in exchange for Ľubomír Višňovský to the Edmonton Oilers .

After three years in Edmonton, Whitney signed a one-year contract with the Florida Panthers in October 2013 , but was placed on the waiver a month later and then played in the AHL for the San Antonio Rampage .

After the 2013/14 season he left North America and joined HK Sochi from the Continental Hockey League for one season . In June 2015 he moved to MODO Hockey in the Svenska Hockeyligan , but only played two competitive games there before announcing the end of his active career. He justified the move with persistent health problems resulting from an ankle injury from the 2010/11 season that had never completely healed . Today he runs the podcast "Spittin 'Chiclets" with his former teammate Paul Bissonnette .

International

Whitney took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics with Team USA and won the silver medal with the team.
