Milan Michálek (* 7. December 1984 in Jindřichův Hradec , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player , who during his playing career from 2000 to 2017 among other 810 games for the San Jose Sharks , Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League on the position of the left winger . Michálek took part in two Olympic Winter Games with the Czech national team and won several medals at world championships . His brother Zbyněk is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Michálek made his debut at the age of 16 in the 2000/01 season at HC České Budějovice in the Czech Extra League . There he came only to five missions, but was part of the regular squad from the 2001/02 season . His 17 points in 47 games earned him the award for rookie of the year . After a season in Budějovice, which he could not make so positive, was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2003 in the first round in sixth place by the San Jose Sharks .

Right at the beginning of the 2003/04 season , the Sharks brought the then 18-year-old into the NHL, as he was considered the most experienced player of his year. After a goal in his first game, he tore a cruciate ligament in his right knee in his second game and was out until January, before Michálek was back on the ice in seven games for the Sharks farm team , the Cleveland Barons . On January 22nd, however, he injured his knee again and had to end the season prematurely. The following season , which was canceled due to the NHL lockout , Michálek used to completely recover from his serious knee injury. The Czech returned to San Jose for the 2005/06 season and at the end of the year received the team's internal award for Rookie of the Year. In the 2006/07 season , the Czech winger developed into one of the leading players in the league's youngest team and set personal bests in all offensive categories , mostly alongside Joe Thornton and Jonathan Cheechoo .

Due to his good performance, his contract, which expired in the summer of 2008, was extended by six years in August 2007 with a total income of 26 million US dollars. Only Owen Nolan had previously received an equally long-term contract in the history of the San Jose Sharks. Michálek paid back the trust of the management with consistently good performances and was the second best striker behind Joe Thornton in the 2007/08 season . The Czech also recorded a similar number of points in the 2008/09 season . However, due to the team's failures in the playoffs, the Sharks management decided in September 2009 to swap Michálek together with Jonathan Cheechoo and a second-round draft pick against Dany Heatley of the Ottawa Senators and a five-round pick.

In February 2016 Michálek was transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs within the league as part of a larger swap deal, which involved a total of nine players . There he was active until the end of the 2016/17 season, before his contract was not extended. Then the Czech ended his active career.

International

Michálek played so far in seven world championships, including three at junior level, the 2010 Winter Olympics and 2014 and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey for the Czech national team . He won the bronze medal for his home country at the U18 Junior World Championship in 2002 and at the World Championships in 2011 and 2012 .
